Look's like the O's will add Schoop to the 40 man roster.

    Brittany Ghiroli ‏@Britt_Ghiroli

Teams have until Tues at 11:59 ET to set their 40-man roster. Two #Orioles likely additions: INF Jonathan Schoop & LHP Mike Belfiore.

Is this to protect him in some sort of way? Was he one of the players who would have been eligible for the Rule 5?

Or is this with the expectation that he will be contributing sooner than we may have thought?

Protection from rule 5. There was some uncertainty about whether Schoop had to be protected yet or not.

The Orioles have an open spot so they only have to DFA one player. I am assuming Q is gone next.

Sounds like Belfiore will also be added.

I will be interested on why Schoop has to be added this year. He was signed August 20, 2008. If he was 18 years old or less he has 5 years of protection before being added to the 40 man roster. He was 16 according to my math. So his 5th year would be up August 20 2013.

He shouldn't have to be added this year according to what I can read on Cots Contracts. So I hope they give an explanation if they add him to the roster.

Per several Qs been getting, Jonathan Schoop DOES need to be protected by the Orioles today and added to 40-man in advance of Rule 5 draft.

Schoop was signed in August, 2008. This year's rule V draft will be the 5th one since he signed-2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012-so apparenlty he needs to be protected.

Sorry, but you count weird. Here is what Cots Contract states: "Under the new CBA, a club has 5 years to evaluate a player who signs his first pro contract at 18 years old or younger."

That is 5 years not 5 Rule 5 drafts. 5 years is not until Aug 2013.

My baseline assumption is that MLB counts weird, or something to that effect, because Duquette probably isn't just adding Schoop to the roster for fun.

Don't assume this is the current rule, but the version of the Major League Rules I've seen, says that a player signed who turned 18 after June 5 of that year "shall be subject to selection at the fifth Rule 5 Selection Meeting that follows the signing date," unless he is signed after "the conclusion of the championship season for the Major or Minor League Club to which the player is assigned on such contract." Schoop was signed on August 20, therefore the exception would not appear to apply. http://bizofbaseball.com/docs/MajorLeagueRules-2008.pdf

Weird or not-that is the way it is counted. Proof is that Schoop was protected.

You are right. I was pointed at the rules in another thread and they verify what you said. Thanks
