    Trade idea: Hammel/Schoop for Butler

Would anyone here do this? It allows us to keep all our young pitching and still get our big bat.

    Thoughts?

    Absolutely. Doubt KC would.

    I wouldn't. Hammel alone, probably.

Also, could this title be changed to indicate that it's an idea, not news? With a question mark maybe?

It'd be tough to lose Hammel and Schoop, but yes I'd do this trade. Butler is a special talent, and is not going to come cheaply. That looks like a fair deal for both sides.

I don't think so, but I did have to think about it for a moment.

I believe Hammel's success last year was legitimate and that he will continue to have something close to that form in the future. And Schoop is just our best viable 2b option down the road and in my opinion our only real high ceiling hitter left in the minors, so while I'm willing to trade him I'm hesitant.

I know Butler is a great hitter. But I don't think trading the closest thing we have to an ace for a DH, even a good value, #4 hitting DH, is our best choice.

Hammel is due to get 7-8 M in arb. If the Royals don't want to take on Shields 9M contract, I doubt they'd be interested in Hammel for 8M

My first thought is that if you change the title of the thread, people won't think this is a done deal.

I don't think the Royals would trade Butler for one year of Hammel. I also think they would be more likely to listen if we were to take back Bruce Chen in trade. Steve Johnson, Arrieta, Strop, Schoop, and Flaherty for Hosmer and Chen might make sense to them.

Good point. I'd do Hammel + $5M for Butler.

Hammel is a free agent in 2014. KC is going to want players that are going to be under team control for awhile. Schoop and Tillman is a more realistic trade offer.

I doubt the Royals can not afford Shields contract. I believe thats just posturing in negotiations currently ongoing with the Rays.

And an awful deal for the Orioles.

I'm not sold on that last trade proposal. Hosmer is a nice piece but he's far from a sure thing, Chen is mediocre, and we're giving up five players for two.

Totally agree. Butler is a slow DH. He just isn't that great. Best I would do is Britton plus a lesser prospect than Schoop. If Butler could play the filed or run the bases I would feel different but he can't and we need to stop valuing him as if he can.
