DD talks about what he has learned at the Winter Meetings.
DD is talking about signing an outfielder and getting a lefthanded pitcher at the winter meetings. But that is just a GM ploy to take the fan base's mind over what he really learned. Here is the real skinny:
DD said that he made progress with trades over the last few days. He said some trade proposals develop and some don't. The ones that don't are progress because he knows not to consider them anymore.
He said some of the trades he proposedl failed so now he know to move on. I would guess that he was talking about Butler, Hosmer and Willingham since that was who he reportedly went the meetings to trade for.
The question is what does he do with this information. He non tendered Reynolds because he thought there was a better replacement. How long does it take before he wonders if signing Reynolds and keeping his young pitchers is a better approach?
Too much of a stretch?

The rumored price for Youkilis makes one reconsider your plan.

That wouldn't surprise me. Reynolds brings a lot of intangibles to the table which Buck would value more than DD. My desire for Reynolds is more out of concern for first base defense than anything else. His range might be shoddy but his glove is excellent and with Cassilla, Hardy and Machado in the infield our GB pitchers would be in heaven.

I'm starting to think they view Mclouth as the 4th outfielder. I think you see a combination of Morse/Morales at dh with Reynolds brought back at first. Davis sees most of his playing time at left field until an injury happens.

I just see the bullpen surplus being involved in a trade at some point. A combination of Ayala, Strop, and Patton is expendable and that's who you can trade, along with a prospect for a Morse/Morales.
I think Reynolds' market value is very limited as teams will want no part of him at 3rd and most contending teams are set at 1st. I think he comes back on a 1 year deal for around 5-6M.
As far as Davis/Mclouth with left field...IMO the team views Davis as part of their core and want to keep him happy. He wants to play the field and I think they like his defense better in the outfield then at 1st especially compared to Reynolds if he can be brought back on the cheap.

I loved the comment attributed to DD about the high cost of mediocrity, because that's exactly what some of these deals are, most of whom went to Boston. Even Youkilis fits that bill on a one year deal. One year of Kevin Youkilis shouldn't cost $13 million, but there it is. I'm still of the belief that there are holes on this team that need to be addressed, but if the O's do make a signing, I believe it will be sensible from a cost standpoint, and not be done for the sake of being done like some of these moves.
