Any interest in Michael Cuddyer?
He's from Norfolk. I know he's 33 and owed 21M over the next two years. However, he can play the corner OF, 1B, and I believe some 3B. He'd add some pop from the right side and over the last three years has a .928 OPS against LH pitching. If you could get him for Arrieta and Avery and the Rockies eat 5M would he be worth that?

What if Col would take that package of players, if the O's ate all 21M? With the contracts being given now 2/21 is pretty reasonable for a 25-30 HR guy that gets on base at a .340 clip, doesn't K a ton, and destroys LH pitching. And he's versitile. His bat would be a big upgrade over Reynolds, and could play a number of roles on this team. He would look nice batting .between Wieters and Davis.

Still seems doubtful Colorado would be interested in an Arrieta/Avery package. We might be able to interest them in a Britton + package, as they could always use a ground ball lefty for their rotation. The second piece would probably need to be better than Avery too, but I'm not sure what that would be exactly. I'm not sure Avery has any significant value, every team has a couple of 'athletes' that have never really put up the stats to back that up, and are destined for a life of AAA/5th outfielder.

I would be down with this. Hard.
He gives us the solid RH bat that we need and can serve as 1B insurance in case Davis' SSS from 2012 is truly indicative of a complete defensive meltdown or as LF insurance in the event that McLouth reverts to his 2011 form. In the likely event that neither of those things happen, the RH DH conundrum is solved, and the bench becomes one if the strongest in all of baseball.

Interesting idea, but I'd definitely say no to acquiring Cuddyer.
I find Bill James' projection of a .780 OPS for him next year pretty realistic. I don't think that's what we're looking for in a DH. He wouldn't outproduce Wilsteve Betepearce by enough to be worth even a member of the cavalry, especially considering our budget.
I think he's an upper middle class man's Jonny Gomes at this point in his career.

Cuddyer is a great fit for us if the cost is not too high in terms of players going to Colorado. I could definitely get behind a deal for Cuddyer.

I had some interest in Cuddyer last offseason, and I remember Buck paying him a compliment when asked about what free agents he might chase. But he'll be 34 next year, and has been worth 4.6 rWAR over the last five seasons combined. I'd pass on the deal even if the Rockies kicked in $5 mm.

His OBP took a bit of a nosedive last yea, and his oblique injury kept him off the field after mid-August. Are these blips in the road or signs of a guy in his mid-30s breaking down?

Not only is he not worth the money, but the Rockies have pretty much said they aren't trading him. I am all for dealing Arrieta, but this isn't the proper deal to do so.

.874 career OPS vs left-handers.
Would be an interesting option if nothing comes to fruition with Morse/Smoak.
