Trade value of a 1st Rd Draft Pick

I like Michael Bourn. I'm just not sure if there's room for him on our roster. That doesn't mean we can't sign him. MLBTR (I think) a while back had a blurb about how teams could get around the draft compensation rules. In essence, let's say the Rangers wanted Bourn, but didn't want to lose their 1st rd draft pick. We sign Bourn to the contract the Rangers want, then deal him to the Rangers in exchange for Cash and something of equal value to our 1st rd pick. My question is this: what's a 1st round pick worth? Specifically a 24th overall pick?

Also, There are 3 players left tied to draft compensation...Bourn, Kyle Lohse, and Raphael Soriano. In the slow days of winter, it could be fun for the OH GMs to dream up some sign-and-trade scenarios. Ready, Go.

There was a huge thread about this topic in regards to LaRoche.

Cliff ...The commissioners office would never allow a sign and trade ...except maybe if it was Atlanta doing the sign and trade. Otherwise it would be collusion and damaging to the Braves.

I believe the Braves did a sign and trade when they traded Soriano to the Rays for Jesse Chavez (... I believe) a few years back...

I don't think players can be traded within a certain time frame of signing a new contract (at least without their permission).

Can't remember the specifics of Soriano being dealt, but he probably worked out a deal negotiating with the new team and was then traded (but I've been wrong before).

Three months from signing, I believe.

Before it influenced the compensation due a free agent and the ability of a team to negotiate with the compensation advantage with their own FA. Bud already said no. Let's not do this again.

Soriano was signed by his own team before going into free agency. Or arbitrated. I forget which. Then traded.

I believe the OP is referring to what Scott Boras has conjectured, and thus far is just speculation, but Boras believes that this theory of a sign and trade for purpose of obtaining draft pick compensation is possible. Obviously, any mechanism to drive the compensation tagged players market is being used by Boras. Doubt any teams will use it, but would be interesting.

Boras is wrong. But hey, we could speculate and did. In a 20 page thread.

Yep, no shortage of speculation in that thread.
