Well... he didn't invest like he said we would... but at least he didn't cut. 90$M is a pretty respectable payroll. Can win with that.

Reimold could very well be the most valuable player of the year in terms of salary/production. It would not surprise me in the least if we get a .300 25 HR 80 RBI 10 SB season out of him.
Of course, it would not surprise me if he was injured most of the year or had a mediocre year b/c of battling with injuries either.
Here is hoping for the former!!

Angelos after the playoffs:
What he forgot to add was "so long as it doesn't cost more than about $95M dollar"."Especially for the Orioles, which we all know is an institution in Maryland," Angelos said. "And for a long period of time, as you gentlemen and ladies have stressed frequently, there was a long, long arid period. I hope this will be the case, this year, that we mean business. And in the future you can depend on this kind of a performance and hopefully much better."
$90M is "pretty respectable". $90M places us right around the middle of spending according to last years payrolls. Does anyone believe we couldn't afford to spent $15M more? $20M more? To become even more "respectable" and further increase our chances of winning?
I do believe we have a nice core of players, but to expect the success of last year without making any major improvements is a bit of a reach. We had to have a one game playoff to get into the playoffs, otherwise we would have "only" had our first winning season in 14 seasons. Now we played a good ballgame and beat Texas to get in...but such success is far from guaranteed this year.
If the O's come out and don't play winning baseball, a lot of people are then going to start thinking "man, I wish we would have spent some money to get some more talent".
It is so clear that Buck and Duq have a ceiling they can't go past, even though for a minute Angelos seemed like he cared enough about winning again to remove that ceiling. Now it just seems like same old same old. If we hadn't won last year this offseason would look pretty much like the previous ones. The fact that we won in 2012 gives people warm and fuzzies, despite the team doing nothing to improve, and merely relying on the players we have to increase their output.
I expect that Angelos will merely pocket the extra $$ he is going to see from a rejuvenated O's fan base. Of course how long that rejuvenation lasts depends on how the O's do. If they start off flat people will quickly forget about the magical 2012 season, especially since the Ravens just won the SB. This is why not making any move to add any type of known productive player is so frustrating to me. It is so clear Angelos doesn't want to spend money. I hope I am proven wrong.Last edited by bt12483; 02-10-2013 at 10:08 AM.

Not exactly the 100m they were supposed to be at after the arb. cases. So Swisher and Saunders would have had the payroll around 109m? Doesn't seem to unreasonable to have expected. Oh well. Still a week until pitchers and catchers report. Plenty of time to improve the team.

I once believed that signing big name free agents was the answer. I no longer believe it. Let me ask those who are critical of this offseason - who should we have signed? An over-priced Greinke? A huge question mark in Hamilton? Maybe we should have traded for Justin Upton. Would you have given up Machado or Bundy? We have a good team with lots of upside. We're focused on building a solid farm system. We can't veer off course by trading our top prospects or significantly over paying for free agents - especially if we have to give up draft picks. Sure, Toronto's moves are intriguing, but they seriously hurt their farm system and are 2 injuries away (Johnson and Reyes) from being crippled for a long time. I'll take our $90M+ payroll and our focus on building the farm system every day and twice on Sundays. Have faith - if a reasonable move was to be made, it would have happened. Let's hope for huge years from Britton, Arrieta, Matusz, Gonzalez, etc. so other teams truly value them and we can have some legit trade bait.
