In a best-case scenario for them, #1 ranked Alabama and Auburn would both win out, and then an Auburn win over the Crimson Tide would vault them into the S.E.C. Championship game, and possibly even the national title game .......... but that's a LOOOOOONG way off.

LAST WEEK

It's not such a long way off, now.

It played out exactly the way that the hypothesis suggested.

Now, there are (likely) only 2 teams ahead of Auburn, as they prepare for the S.E.C. championship game against 11-1 Missouri.

And with a win over Missouri in the S.E.C. title game today, Auburn is now 12-1.

The hypothesis is complete, with the two conference championship games pending.

There is at least one Auburn player (Nosa Eguae) who played a significant role on the 2010 national champion team. He's now a senior.

What a couple of bookends to a career, with a crap filling.

After winning the national championship with an undefeated season in 2010, Auburn's football team gradually sank over the next two seasons, going 8-5 with a middle-tier bowl win (Chick-fil-A) in 2011, followed by a losing season (3-9) in 2012.

Today, they beat 7th ranked Texas A&M in College Station to improve their overall record to 6-1, and will almost certainly vault themselves into the top-20 (they are currently ranked # 24) when the rankings come out tomorrow night.

When all is said and done, Auburn should AT LEAST find themselves in a middle-tier bowl by season's end. Depending on the outcomes of their 2 games with Georgia and Alabama, they could even be looking at a B.C.S. bowl.

Also, the Tigers can't overlook Tennessee, who scored a major upset of their own today over 11th ranked South Carolina. They will have 95,000 rabid Volunteer fans to deal with on that day.

They have a HUGE test this Saturday, when they travel to Starkville, Mississippi to take on the undefeated, and 3rd ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Davis Wade Stadium will be rocking like a madhouse with 62,000 rabid (mostly) Bulldog fans.

The Bulldogs were ready for the Tigers, and they handled them convincingly.

The only thing for Auburn to do now is forget about this game, and go out and win their next one against South Carolina in two weeks.

Auburn held on for a hard-earned victory over an underrated South Carolina team at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Now, they have a HUGE road game on Saturday, as they travel to Oxford, Mississippi to take on the 7th-ranked Rebels, who just barely lost for the first time this season to L.S.U. in front of 102,000-plus in Baton Rouge.

West is a nightmare this year. Obviously, I'm biased but a 10-2 Auburn team deserves strong consideration for a playoff berth. 2 road games against Top 10 teams so far and 3 more to go. I think we can win all 3, but it will take an improved pass rush.

After having lost 3 consecutive games last month (including a 59-0 drubbing at the hands of Alabama), going into Auburn and beating the Tigers on their homefield at Jordan-Hare Stadium essentially became Texas A&M's Super Bowl for the 2014 season.

The Aggies will probably be invited to a middle tier bowl game at season's end (perhaps the Cotton Bowl or the Gator Bowl, etc.), but even a win in one of those would probably not top their win over the Tigers this past Saturday.

As for Auburn, they still have two big games left to be played against Georgia and Alabama, with Division I-AA Samford sandwiched in between. After having already lost to Mississippi State, the Tigers are essentially 3 games behind them in the S.E.C.'s West division, hence, a trip to the S.E.C. title game is very unlikely.

However ...... if they do happen to win their final 3 games, they would in all likelihood be invited to a major/upper tier bowl game, while still maintaining an outside shot at still making the 4-team playoff (a slew of teams ahead of them would have to lose a game in either the regular season or the conference championships for that to happen.) Somewhat similar to last season, Auburn has to hope that Alabama wins out until their showdown with them on November 29th to maximize their chances at getting the highest ranking possible at season's end.

All is not lost. Auburn can still go to the Music city bowl. They might get lucky and play UL Lafayette.
