Auburn Revived

(FROM THE O.P.)

In a best-case scenario for them, #1 ranked Alabama and Auburn would both win out, and then an Auburn win over the Crimson Tide would vault them into the S.E.C. Championship game, and possibly even the national title game .......... but that's a LOOOOOONG way off.

LAST WEEK

It's not such a long way off, now.

It played out exactly the way that the hypothesis suggested.

Now, there are (likely) only 2 teams ahead of Auburn, as they prepare for the S.E.C. championship game against 11-1 Missouri.

And with a win over Missouri in the S.E.C. title game today, Auburn is now 12-1.

The hypothesis is complete, with the two conference championship games pending.

After winning the national championship with an undefeated season in 2010, Auburn's football team gradually sank over the next two seasons, going 8-5 with a middle-tier bowl win (Chick-fil-A) in 2011, followed by a losing season (3-9) in 2012.

Today, they beat 7th ranked Texas A&M in College Station to improve their overall record to 6-1, and will almost certainly vault themselves into the top-20 (they are currently ranked # 24) when the rankings come out tomorrow night.

When all is said and done, Auburn should AT LEAST find themselves in a middle-tier bowl by season's end. Depending on the outcomes of their 2 games with Georgia and Alabama, they could even be looking at a B.C.S. bowl.

Also, the Tigers can't overlook Tennessee, who scored a major upset of their own today over 11th ranked South Carolina. They will have 95,000 rabid Volunteer fans to deal with on that day.

In the meantime, Auburn is flying high, and beaming with pride over their huge road win today ....... and will be looking for a little payback against both Georgia and Alabama, whom both defeated Auburn last year by a combined score of 87-0.

It was a hell of a run for the Tigers since this O.P.

(ALMOST ONE YEAR LATER)

The Tigers are off to another strong start in 2014 ...... they are 5-0 overall, including wins against two ranked teams (Kansas State, and L.S.U.)

They have a HUGE test this Saturday, when they travel to Starkville, Mississippi to take on the undefeated, and 3rd ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Davis Wade Stadium will be rocking like a madhouse with 62,000 rabid (mostly) Bulldog fans.

The Bulldogs were ready for the Tigers, and they handled them convincingly.

The only thing for Auburn to do now is forget about this game, and go out and win their next one against South Carolina in two weeks.

Auburn held on for a hard-earned victory over an underrated South Carolina team at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Now, they have a HUGE road game on Saturday, as they travel to Oxford, Mississippi to take on the 7th-ranked Rebels, who just barely lost for the first time this season to L.S.U. in front of 102,000-plus in Baton Rouge.

After having lost 3 consecutive games last month (including a 59-0 drubbing at the hands of Alabama), going into Auburn and beating the Tigers on their homefield at Jordan-Hare Stadium essentially became Texas A&M's Super Bowl for the 2014 season.

The Aggies will probably be invited to a middle tier bowl game at season's end (perhaps the Cotton Bowl or the Gator Bowl, etc.), but even a win in one of those would probably not top their win over the Tigers this past Saturday.

As for Auburn, they still have two big games left to be played against Georgia and Alabama, with Division I-AA Samford sandwiched in between. After having already lost to Mississippi State, the Tigers are essentially 3 games behind them in the S.E.C.'s West division, hence, a trip to the S.E.C. title game is very unlikely.

However ...... if they do happen to win their final 3 games, they would in all likelihood be invited to a major/upper tier bowl game, while still maintaining an outside shot at still making the 4-team playoff (a slew of teams ahead of them would have to lose a game in either the regular season or the conference championships for that to happen.) Somewhat similar to last season, Auburn has to hope that Alabama wins out until their showdown with them on November 29th to maximize their chances at getting the highest ranking possible at season's end.

After a drubbing at the hands of Georgia sent the Tigers to their 3rd loss of the season, which completely KO'd Auburn from any possibility of making the 4-game playoff (they were ranked # 9 in the playoff standings previous to the loss), Auburn has one major goal left this year ...... beat Alabama in the regular-season finale, which would salvage an otherwise disappointing season.

An upset win over the Crimson Tide would severely hamper their rival's chances for gaining a spot in the 4-team playoff AND could also potentially KO 'Bama from even playing in the S.E.C. championship game against the winner of the Eastern division (either Missouri or Georgia.) If Auburn beats Alabama, then either Mississippi or Mississippi State could win the S.E.C. West by winning their remaining two games.

    • It’s probably fairly inevitable that Grayson will need TJ at some point in his career. Velo increases the risk. However, it’s very common for all pitchers, regardless of velo. The biggest thing Grayson has going for him is that he’s made it to age 24 without a shoulder or elbow injury (at least that I can recall), which already separates him from many others in the high velo club. The best predictor of future injuries is past injuries, and while he did have that lat issue that knocked him out for a fair bit his record is pretty clean in that respect.  Also, it’s more the conventional baseball wisdom than something I’m aware of being supported in stats, but Grayson has a prototypical pitcher’s frame and in theory that could help his durability. It doesn’t seem like he generates his velo from a max effort delivery.
    • It was a fastball.   If you’re bailing out on a fastball from a LHP with a 3/4 delivery like that I think there’s a problem but if you think it’s perfectly fine you’re entitled to your opinion.
    • It’s been a few years, but I seem to recall there was some talk about his playing 2B when Duquette was still here. Might have been some kind of instructional league chatter or something. It certainly cannot hurt.
    • I'm not sure that I understand all of your post. In particular the mentioning of Elias and Adley in comparison to Belichick and Brady. That is an apples to strawberries comparison at best. Both are fruit and red and round, otherwise unalike. Brady's role as QB and BB's role as head coach and GM is far different and much more directly central to success than Elias GM and certainly Adley as a catcher. However, when speaking about Hal Steinbrenner being an impediment to Elias remaining as GM of the Orioles long term, I don't see it. NY is a totally different market than here. You are NEVER going to be given 4 years for a total tear down and all the future building moves for the sake of the present won't fly in NY. Yes, I am sure than other owners like Steinbrenner envy what the O's have amassed. It's why they changed the draft rules. However, some owners know that the path that Elias used to get the Orioles to where they are is not viable in their markets as they know how alienating it would be to their fanbase. This is to say, that if Elias wants to be here, Rubenstein has the pockets that are plenty deep enough to make that happen. It's probably going to be a similar contract to what the Mets are paying Stearns and the Dodgers are paying Friedman.
    • If he can't locate the breaking stuff and throw the fastball with a good location he gets destroyed. I keep hearing how good his stuff is, but his pitch values are not good on anything but his offspeed pitch. His fastball had negative run value last year and it does again this year. Barrel and hard hit % are both up this year too. I guess he'll live or die by the changeup if it's working or not. Whiff rate and K% are good not great according to statcast.
    • What about Means and Kremer?
    • If the Sacramento A's need a second baseman I am fine with this.
