Steve Fisher Wins 300th Game as Aztecs Coach

As of right now, Steve Fisher is still best remembered as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, who led his team to the National Championship in 1989 upon the sudden departure of Bill Frieder just prior to that season's N.C.A.A. tournament, and who also led them (Michigan) to back-to-back appearances in the National Championship Game in 1992 and 1993 behind his own "Fab Five" recruiting class.

After adding the N.I.T. Championship and a 24-11 record in his final season with the Wolverines in 1997, Fisher was fired as the team's head coach that October, due mostly to the now infamous Ed Martin scandal.

Undeterred, Fisher was hired as the head coach of San Diego State University 2 years later. He was taking over a moribund program had gone 4-21 the year before he took over, and that had sustained 13 losing seasons in 14 years between 1986 and 1999. The one winning season that they had was 15-14 in 1995-96.

In only his second season with his new team, Fisher brought the Aztecs back from over a decade of horrible basketball, leading the team to a respectable 14-14 final record. In his 3rd season at the helm, S.D.S.U. won 21 games, the Mountain West Conference Championship, and went to the N.C.A.A. tournament for the first time in 17 years.

Still not impressed ??? Three years ago, Fisher's Aztecs went 34-3, and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in the school's history. S.D.S.U. has won 20 or more games for 8 consecutive seasons, and at 19-1 overall now, will almost certainly break that barrier again this year.

On Saturday, Fisher won his 300th game as San Diego State's head coach with a win over Colorado State at the now perennially sold-out Aztec Bowl in Viejas Arena (12,414), and at 19-1 overall, he has his team ranked 5th in the nation for only the second time in the school's 92-year history (1922-23 through the present.)

At Michigan, Fisher's 1989 National Championship was scrutinized greatly because of the fact that he only coached the final 6 games of the season, and it was essentially Bill Frieder's team that he rode the coattails of to said championship ...... until he recruited (and coached) his own Fab Five to back-to-back National Championship games several years later, putting to rest the question of whether or not he was capable of recruiting and coaching a big-time college program of his own.

At San Diego State, Fisher took over a horrible mid-major program, won a conference championship and a trip to the N.C.A.A. tournament in only his 3rd season there, and has had them consistently playing at the Top-20 level for almost a decade now. Will his Aztecs make it back to the Sweet Sixteen again in March, or perhaps go even further than that ??? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain. For whatever his flaws may be, Fisher surely is an excellent basketball coach, and a great motivator.

San Diego State advances to the Sweet Sixteen for the 2nd time in 4 years ...... also, THESE ARE THE ONLY TIMES IN THE SCHOOL'S HISTORY that they have advanced that far.

P.S. San Diego State has won 119 CONSECUTIVE GAMES when leading at the 5:00 mark of the second half.
