18th Round - Matt Grimes - RHP - Georgia Tech

Recommended Posts

Grimes is a redshirt junior that stands at 6'6", 208 pounds. He has been drafted twice previously, going pretty high in the 4th round out of high school in 2010 and the 31st round in 2013.

Thoughts from his head coach going into 2014 season: "He's a major talent. He had an unfortunate injury that cost him really two years in our program. We saw some good flashes this fall and we hope he can get back to the form he was at when he was a freshman."

Grimes made 12 starts for the Yellow Jacket this year. He pitched to a 4.39 ERA in 65.2 innings, allowing 75 hits, 33 walks, while striking out 36. Grimes wasn't quite able to get back to his freshman form as his strikeout rate was way down from his freshman year when he struck out a batter per inning.

BA remark

We both still are not completely sold on the pitching staff, but Matt Grimes’ re-emergence has been a very pleasant surprise, and a key development. Ultimately, I think Tech will take some lumps against the top teams in the ACC, because I don’t think its talent or experience compares with the Seminoles and Cavs, for instance. But this is looking again like a likely regional team.
