A Fascinating Second Half Awaits

(By Tim Kurkjian)

1) September (or Before) Call-Ups

A number of top prospects, including Pirates outfielder Gregory Polanco, have been recalled, but on the way are even more kids, some of whom might help a contender down the stretch.

The Dodgers don't have a true center fielder; maybe they will bring up Joc Pederson -- a true center fielder -- to see if he can add something in the pennant race. A scout who saw the Orioles' Dylan Bundy recently clocked him at 92-94 mph with good command -- maybe he could throw a few important innings in September. The Pirates could take a look at right-hander Nick Kingham in hopes that he could do something resembling what Gerrit Cole brought to the pennant race last year.

Other call-ups could include four right-handers: the Mets' Noah Syndergaard, Archie Bradley (if healthy) of the Diamondbacks, the Twins' Alex Meyer and Mike Foltynewicz of the Astros.

2) Jon Lester

3) Derek Jeter's Final Game

4) What will Tony La Russa do?

5) The Next Commissioner

6) The Awards Races

7) Injuries

8)Pennant Races

They should be great.

Baltimore has created some room in the AL East, but no team is good enough to run away in that division. Can Toronto make the playoffs for the first time since 1993? The Tigers have gotten hot again, but the Royals are still in the hunt to make the playoffs for the first time since 1985. The AL West might send three teams to the playoffs. The A's are the game's best team, but they can't shake the Angels, and the Mariners are also dangerous.

The NL East could go down to the final day between two teams, the Nationals and Braves. Same for the NL West with the Dodgers and Giants. The NL Central could go to the final day with four teams in contention: the Brewers, Cardinals, Reds and Pirates.

9) The Trade Deadline

10) Will David Price get Traded?

1. Don't see Bundy getting called up. He has a ways to go.

2. Who cares.

3. Will occur in the regular season.

4. Something douchey.

5. Hopefully MacPhail.

6. Trout, Felix, Kershaw, ? Maybe Kershaw

7. Happen

8. O's win the East, nothing else matters.

9. Will be uneventful.

10. Doubtful.

2. Who cares.
I care.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lester leave the American League East after the way that he has pitched in his 27 career starts against the Orioles.

Lester was traded to the Athletics for Yoenis Cespedes and a 2015 compensation draft pick.

He (Lester) is making his debut for the Athletics today against the Royals, while Cespedes is making his Red Sox debut today against the Yankees.

    • I'm projected to attend 0 games this year.
    • I thought to myself... what is the financial impact to David Banuelos for his 1 AB in MLB besides always being able to say he was a professional MLB baseball player which thru 4/17/24 there were 20,587 of...  He was earning $35,800 per year as a AAA player (breakdown of this is elsewhere but in season it is $1200 a week).  He earned approximately $4,568 for his 1 game.  But by being added to the 26 man, his AAA salary bumps to $60,300 in 2024.  Assuming he passes thru waivers and accepts back to Norfolk, and doesn't make it back to MLB this year... he will have earned an additional $28,800 (ish).   If he gets added to 26 man for a 2nd time and goes back down to AAA... he minimum AAA salary doubles to $120,600. I don't know how the offseason pay breaks down for AAA with MLB time so it could be more? So David had got a nice little MLB lotto scratch off winner this week with his 1 AB.  Not bad for what I have to believe was the third string AAA guy this year.
    • If Hays starts to hit, I could easily see him get 3-4 starts a week but as long a everyone is healthy and Cowser doesn’t crater, that’s probably about the best he can hope for. Ramon Urias is actually in a worse spot as the Holliday saga unfolds.  Westburg is a fixture at 3B and Mateo is first in line for the leftovers at 2B.
    • After the Pittsburgh series, the O's were 5-4 and I told my wife that besides the first 2 games, many of the players in the line-up haven't started hitting well, yet.  I said, "Just wait until all the players in the line-up wake up."  Well, they were wide awake for the next nine games.  Hopefully, this continues.
    • Yeah, they have a sneaky good rotation.
    • Is low babip really a lone indicator of bad luck? Shouldn’t it be accompanied by a high hard hit% if you want to claim bad luck?
    • It's all fun and games until: Jackson Holliday: .077/.040/.117 36 runs 9 RBI 9 H 9 BB 225 Ks (-) 3.6 rWAR Austin Hays: .136/.073/.210 18 Runs 18 RBI 27 H 27 BB 199 Ks (-) 9 rWAR
