I sense a strong urge to "keep the band together" from the front office.

This worries me.

Almost 100 wins will do that for you a bit. If it didn't say "only interested in bringing him back for 1 year" I could understand - but you have a good point. I think DD realizes that bringing the band back would be nice but he still has to look at the long term, which is one reason I believe Nick hasn't been signed.

The only move I felt DD panicked on was Ubaldo - there was so much gnashing of teeth that he wasn't getting things done that it may have played into it a bit. There was some post here somewhere yesterday and there was some angst already (not you CoC) about DD not being proactive.

If he's not asking for a lot, and he's very happy with his role then I'd absolutely give him 2 years.

2y/3M? No problem. That's more than enough for his value to the team if he's content in his role.

Just so long as the deal is small enough that everyone is ok with cutting bait at any time. Outside of a very specific, very small role he's a replacement level performer. With a history of behavioral problems. Usually there's no reason to sign a 250 plate appearance DH to a multi-year contract.

I think folks read panic or desperation into the Ubaldo contract as an after-the-fact thing regarding his performance in year one.

Just out of curiosity, how do you think he would project as a full time DH in place of Cruz? If Cruz is out the door, Young would be a very low risk investment.

Dan never panicked on Ubaldo. In the same circumstance, he'd do it again. Santana would have been worse. I have seen Ubaldo pitch well. For the Orioles.

I think the thinking may be that we won 96 games without a full season from either Manny or Wieters, so if we "keep the band together" and get full seasons from Manny and Matt, we should be just as good if not better.
