What happens if Earl stays on as manager past 1982

Do the Orioles continue to be competitive if Earl stays on as manager? After 1983 the Orioles are not competitive for another 10 years and was wondering if Earl staying would have made a difference or did Earl see that there was trouble ahead and knew he better get out while the going was good.

Not much changes. They probably still win in '83, since Altobelli basically didn't change anything. They probably still descend into losing after that, as the team got old, the farm system was drying up, and they only had the cash/desire to sign 2nd- and 3rd-tier free agents. It would have been interesting to see how Earl would have reacted to the changes in pitcher usage. It's hard to believe he would have stuck with small staffs and tried to get as many innings as possible out of starters when the rest of the world was transitioning to a max-effort, high-turnover setup. I think the contrast between the '83 Orioles with McGregor and Flanagan and Tippy often soft-tossing stuff in the low-to-mid-80s and today's staffs would be pretty jarring.
