OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AROUND THE MAJORS:

Quietly, the Athletics have been creeping back towards respectability.

They have won 4 straight games (including a sweep of the Tigers), 6 out of their last 7 (including taking 3 out of 4 from the Yankees), and 9 out of their last 12.

Their defense this year has been horrendous though, which is a major reason why they are still well below .500, at 23-33.

Michael Joseph Wacha continues to roll.

Last night, he pitched 7 innings of 1-run ball for his 8th W of the season.

He walked 0, struck out 5, and had an excellent strikes-to-balls ratio: O107 Pitches (76 Strikes, 31 Balls.)

His previous start against the Dodgers was interrupted by a rain-delay, and he had to warm up twice. Although he threw 5 shutout innings of no-hit ball before giving up 4 runs in the 6th, his command was lacking, and he uncharacteristically had walked 3 batters and had thrown almost 90 pitches in those first 5 innings.

The previously-smoking Nationals have been stymied as of late.

They have lost 6 out of their last 7 games, 7 out of their last 9, and 8 out of their last 12.

Former Oriole Jake Arrieta tallied his 5th win of the season by pitching 6 innings of 1-run ball against the Nationals.

Arrieta struck out 8, walked 0, and had an excellent strikes-to-balls ratio: O97 Pitches (63 Strikes, 34 Balls.)

For the season, Arrieta is 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA, and a 1.085 WHIP.

In his 11 starts so far, he has gone at least 6 innings 9 out of 11 times, at least 7 innings 5 out of 11 times, and at least 8 innings 1 out of 11 times.
