Recommended Posts

Like the previous years, this will be the thread where we will keep the draft picks and follow them through signing. Post any signings in this thread, or in the forum, and I'll keep this post updated. Thanks. Player will become bold when he signs.

So is the number listed above the allotted amount for the entire draft, or just for the top 10 picks? If it's just the top 10, what's the allotted amount for the entire draft?

You get 100K for each pick after the 10th round. Any money not used to sign those picks can not be used elsewhere.

I don't expect Jack Graham to actually get 100K to sign.

Yeah. It does not work they way glenn was asking anymore. I think you explained it as well as can be done.

glenn, if you want to give a 15 round pick 3 million. You have to save 2.9 million somewhere in the top 10 picks and sign all of them.

To muddy the waters a bit more teams can go over their pool limits, but the Orioles have not shown any desire to do so to date.

You have to sign all top 10 picks in order to sign someone drafted after the 10th round to above slot money? That doesn't make sense, am I misunderstanding?

Yes you are.

If you do not sign someone in the top 10 the pool money allocated to that pick is lost.

That does not mean that you can not sign someone after the 10th round to an over slot deal if you have the money available.

What happened to the Astros last season is when the Aiken deal fell through and that money was removed from their pool they no longer had the funds to sign Nix.

I think you pay a dollar in fines for every dollar you go over the limit, up to 105% of the pool. After that, you start losing draft picks.

Up to 5 percent over, a team is taxed 75 percent on the amount they go over. 5-10 percent over, a team is taxed 75 percent on the amount they go over AND lose their first-round selection in the next year's draft. 10-15 percent results in a 100 percent taxation on the overage, AND the loss of first- and second-round picks in the following draft. Over 15 percent results in a 100 percent tax on the overage and they lose their first round picks for the next two drafts.

It is very punitive, and I would be shocked if anyone ever went more than 5 percent over.

Yes. This. Thanks.

Nice, just as expected when the team drafted him. Who do you think gets the overslot money?

    • I like Vazquez a little bit. I don't know how much he will hit at the upper levels, but he controls the strike zone, can run a bit, and is a good defender. He's got a utility player ceiling but for a 30K 20th round pick, he looks like a very nice org guy at the very least.
    • Well, he has hasn't done anything at the major league level yet and he still has defensive issues so we don't know whether he was a good 2nd round pick or not.  I think the bat is going to play at the major league level, but I see him more as a major league regular bat, with sketchy defensive traits until he can master corner outfield. But really my comment was more on the philosophy more than anything else. Looking at that draft, there's not a lot of guys who have made it to the majors or produced much in that 3-5 rounds yet.   It's hard to find signable high school talent after the first couple of rounds unless a team can go overslot, especially now that these top players can make pretty good NIL money in college. They know they ca have a good college experience, and play in front of packed crowds for the top programs, rather than taking long bus rides to Savannah, GA to play in front of 700 people on a Tuesday night.  So we're seeing a lot more college heavy drafts. Darrel Hernaiz is the only high school drafted player outside of the first round that has made the majors from an Elias draft.  Now Mayo should be the second, but he of course was a COVID draft overslot.
    • Mike Wright?   Ouch!
    • Whenever I get excited about the first two starts a pitcher has, I just remember Mike Wright, who pitched two seven inning shutouts out of the gate.
    • This reminded me of, in the 90’s, anecdotally, every year, Mussina would have at least one outing where he’d just get absolutely SHELLED.
    • If he throws that many hittable pitches in the heart of the plate against the Yankees (or any Major League team for that matter) he is likely to get a similar result.
    • Nick Pollack's write up mentioned the BABIP, though certainly watching that performance it was the kind of performance to make you think Voros McCracken and DIPS theory is hokum. I don't think it was random variation getting pummeled there last night.     Hopefully the Angels didn't find any cues the Yankees might also be able to benefit from.
