On the bright side...this team can hit the snot out of the ball

I've been very focused on the horrible pitching performance this spring, but let's not ignore what the offense is doing. 8 runs, 11 runs, 16 runs the last three days. I haven't counted up the homers, but it's been about 12 or so, including three from the rejuvenated J.J. Hardy. Trumbo's clobbering the ball, Rickard's setting the table, Reimold's waking up, etc. Granted, some of the offense is coming off AA/AAA pitchers, but it's been impressive nevertheless. It really does look like we'll be watching beer league softball this summer.

It appears that is the formula.

Also, the Team ERAs for the Blue Jays and Orioles were quite close last year. Even with them having David Price for a while. They just crushed the ball.

But are they potent enough to score 800+ runs? That's about how many runs the Orioles will need to score this year to contend in the AL East with the pitching staff they have now.

I think 750 is more likely, but sure, it's possible with this lineup. They'll need a lot of career or near-career years for 800 runs.

I think the best part about this team is that, even if the team ends up being horrible (which is entirely possible with this rotation of debris), this is the type of team where we're virtually assured to beat the absolute piss out of the Yankees in at least one game. Like a real good 15-2 on a nice summer day where you listen to the entire game over the radio while you're working around the yard and grilling.

Incidentally, here are the runs scored by AL teams last season:

891 Toronto

764 New York

751 Texas

748 Boston

721 Houston

724 Kansas City

713 Baltimore

710 league average

696 Minnesota

694 Oakland

689 Detroit

669 Cleveland

661 Los Angeles

656 Seattle

644 Tampa Bay

622 Chicago

....891 runs by Toronto. Eight hundred ninety one runs, 127 better than second place. Never mind the Orioles, could the Blue Jays possibly repeat that? Baltimore's offense can measure up to any other team in baseball, I believe that. Except Toronto. They're absurd.

I actually got to this game. I couldn't tell if the Sox pitchers just threw flat or the Os just have nice swing planes but the bats were flying. It also hotter than normal - which could mean nice Jun/Jul/Aug performances. Regardless - it was good to be an Os fan today.
