Baltimore Orioles (3-0) vs. Tampa Bay Rays (2-2)

Streak / L10

BAL: N/A

TBR: N/A

*2015 stats will be used for now

Game 1 (7:05)

(QS=0)Chris Tillman (11-11) 4.99 (1.39/.267), 120/64 (20HR)

vs.

(QS=0)Chris Archer (12-13) 3.23 (1.14/.220), 252/66 (19HR)

Chris Tillman: Not much to go on yet with Tillman since he only threw two innings. He had great velocity and great stuff leading to five strikeouts, but he will now face the Rays with not as much adrenaline and better hitters. Tillman has fallen victim to the long ball a lot against the Rays leading to the high ERA despite the solid WHIP and BAA. Of course, Longoria owns him and Forsythe is pretty good, too. I think the main thing for Tillman here is keeping the ball in the park. The rest of his numbers and stuff was already discussed in the previous matchup. I will start using the 2016 numbers when Tillman's turn comes around again.

Splits & Sits

Chris Archer: Archer is turning into a fine young pitcher for the Rays with definite ace potential if he's not already there. Archer has posted ERA's between 3.22 and 3.33 the last three seasons with WHIPs under 1.15 in two of them. He has had WARs of 2.2, 2.5 and 4.3 the last three seasons as well. He threw 212 innings last season and struck out 252 batters while walking only 66. He has continued that early on with 12 strikeouts in his 2016 debut in five innings, but he did allow three runs (two earned) as well on three walks and five hits while taking the loss. The Orioles have done pretty well against him with walks being a part of that.

He is equally effective against righties and lefties and in pretty much any game situation last season. The guy didn't have many weaknesses to exploit outside of his control. He was very good both away and at home as well, but as menioned above, he has always struggled against the Orioles. Hopefully, that will continue.

Pitch wise, Archer holds his opponent BA at .233 or lower until he gets up over 90 pitches. At that point, it jumps to .316/.393/.382. If he gets over 105, it drops back to a pedestrian .167/.231/.154. There's really not much to exploit with Archer. The only thing the Orioles can do is continue to be patient and hope they get some pitches to hit and some free passes.

First, a fantastic start from Jimenez yesterday after a rocky start. We all know we're not likely to see this consistently, but it sure is nice when Jimenez has even average control over his nasty stuff. Hughes got some favors from the ump, but he pitched well also. The Twins just couldn't hold on to their 2-0 lead and it was great to see this team come back and get the sweep.

Archer vs Tillman; who is the better Chris? I would be surprised if Archer didn't rack up a ton of K's against us just like he did Toronto. Tillman needs to keep the ball in the park and Archer needs to avoid giving out the free pass while he's getting all those strikeouts. It will also be interesting to see if Tillman has the same velocity and stuff he had for two innings on opening day.

The Rays should be a tougher opponent than the Twins in pretty much every aspect, so this will be a fun series to watch. It looks like our pitching matchups will be Drew Smyly and Mike Wright for game two. For game three, it will likely be Jake Odorizzi and Tyler Wilson though Wilson hasn't been announced yet, but he seems to be the most likely candidate at this time.

Our schedule is as follows: We have three against the Rays, three at Boston and four at Texas followed by a much needed off day. We then face Toronto, KC and the Rays again all for three games each. I am anxious to see how we fare against these teams. Just a FYI, game one against Boston will also be their home opener.

Palmer tonight? I called in sick to work tonight. My back has been destroying me this week. I hope Jim finally gets in the booth.

Friday Night Black. My favorite uni.

Sorry to hear about your back. I hurt mine really bad about a year ago and probably ruptured a muscle or two and it's still not right in the lower oblique/right low back area. Hope yours gets better!

Edit: OK, so I can edit posts here, but not in the other section of the forum. What gives?

Anyway, weather forecast for tonight. No precipitation in the forecast! Temps around 50 at gametime falling into the mid 40's after 9PM. WNW winds blowing at 10MPH.
