CWS: -2, Won 6 of 7 / L10: 8-2

Game 3 (7:05)

vs.

(QS=4)Mat Latos (4-0) 0.74 (0.82/.151), 13/7 (1HR)

Kevin Gausman: Gausman looked sharp for most of his opening start throwing high 90's and allowing only one run on three hits and two walks in five innings. He also recorded seven strikeouts and threw 91 pitches. The only thing I didn't like was how he reacted when he got a couple bad calls. He seemed to lose his composure and his command suffered in the fifth inning. It also appeared as though Gausman intentionally threw high and tight to a batter which fortunately only hit jersey, but he has to have better self control and mental toughness than that because getting bad calls sometimes is a fact of life in baseball. Gausman has only two innings in relief against Chicago, but has done pretty well at Camden Yards which is exactly what we're going to need against Latos unless he decides to cool down.

Mat Latos: No two ways about it; Mat Latos has been practically unhittable. In 24.1 innings, he has allowed only two runs and 13 hits, but seven walks also. Latos has been plagued with abdominal and shoulder injuries both in the minors and during his time with the Padres and Reds and was uneffective last season after putting two and a half good years in Cincinnati, but he seems to be back to his old self early on for Chicago. His only start against the Orioles was really bad and Pedro Alvarez is the only one with a solid sample size.

The Orioles come away with a win in game two, but we can thank the many Chicago blunders in this one which was the difference in this game. The Orioles still had to take advantage of the open doors and that they did. There were two defensive blunders for Chicago in the bottom of the fifth after Rodon had pitched so well up to that point. One was a routine double play ball that was booted by Lawrie and the other an errant throw to first by Rollins on the second half of a double play apparently because he tripped over his own feet and tried to make the throw anyway. Then, there's the bad send on Rollins in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded which bailed the struggling Mike Wright out after giving up only one run. On top of all that, Ventura left Rodon in the game too long ultimately ending up with a three run homer from Reimold to right field which was the difference in this 6-3 win for the Orioles. We will now face Chicago's best two pitchers in the final two games of this four game set. Early on, the Orioles are looking like a team that is going to play well at home and struggle on the road.

Gausman and Latos. Latos is red hot coming into this one and you're going to have to make a trip to the Lawrence Berkeley National Labs to use their $27M electron microscope to find his ERA and WHIP. However, he has only made one start against the Orioles and it was at Camden Yards; it did not go well for him and it was in September of 2014. Gausman on the other hand has thrown only two relief innings against the White Sox, but has pitched very well at Camden Yards. Should be a good one as Brett Lawrie will go for three straight games of having a routine ground ball go through his legs.

The Yankees blew a lead in Boston as the Sox got two off of Tanaka in the seventh and got two more off of Betances in the eighth, so Boston remains 1.5 behind and the Yankees fall to five game out and have now lost two in a row along with the Rays. Toronto and TB are tied for third sitting four back, so there is a bit of a gap now between Baltimore/Boston and the rest. As for Chicago's 2.5 game lead, KC's game is in Seattle and is just getting ready to start now, so that lead will change based on what KC does.
