Jimmy Yacabonis (Formerly Means and Yacabonis)

Means has improved all of his peripheral numbers this season.

H/9 is down 1.9 from last season.

HR/9 is down 0.6.

K/9 is up 3.1.

BB/9 is down 0.4.

WHIP is down 0.226

Good stuff even though it's still early in the season. It would be nice to see a college lefty develop in our system.

Would like to see him get promoted and see how he does in Bowie.

I think that happens in the next few weeks. There are several Bowie starters who aren't doing much to deserve a spot (Bridwell 5.13 ERA, Aquino 4.91 ERA, Garcia 6.47 ERA).

The Frederick Keys are excited to announce that pitchers John Means and Jimmy Yacabonis have been promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. It marks the first call-up to the Eastern League for both, while the duo becomes the fourth and fifth members of the orange and black to receive promotions this season.

Means, 23, was one of the Carolina League’s top starters over the first two months. In nine games, the southpaw went 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Over 50 innings he allowed only 10 earned runs and 10 walks, while striking out 54. Opponents were hitting .228 against him. In his final start on Monday, Means fired off a seven-inning, complete game shutout against Potomac. He departs for Double-A Bowie with the third-best ERA in the circuit, while he ranked second in strikeouts and fifth in innings pitched.

In all nine of Means’ starts this season, he has allowed two runs or less (a streak which is at 10 games if you go back to his final start of 2015). In the month of May he posted a 1.44 ERA in four contests. Originally selected by the Orioles in the 11th round of the 2014 draft, Means played his college baseball at West Virginia and Fort Scott (KS) Community College.

Yacabonis, 24, went 0-2 with five saves (six chances) and a 3.98 ERA in 16 games. Working 20.1 innings, he gave up nine earned runs, walked six and struck out 21. The New Jersey native held opponents to a .227 batting average against.

Selected by the Orioles in the 13th round of the 2013 draft out of St. Joseph’s University, the right-hander did not permit a run across 8.1 May innings. He heads to the Baysox as the CL leader in games pitched and is tied for third in games finished (10).

You look at some of these prospects and you wonder why are we ranked near the bottom in farm systems. Doesn't seem to add up..

23 years old in high A doesn't move the needle much even if he was doing well. Now, if he continues to make noise in AA, folks will take notice.

Congrats to Means for putting himself in position to get noticed. I'll be following him closely, as I have been for a while now.

4 runs in 5 and 1/3rd in his debut. Keeps the ball down, got some ground balls. Doesn't seem to have an out pitch. Radar gun was off (apparently only until Means was done), but he is definitely not overpowering.

I dunno if I'd got too excited.

Did not look good last night. Many of the outs were rockets to the outfield. Fastball sat at 89-90, once hit 92. Slow curve got some ugly swings and misses. Got to adjust to this level. The way the fastballs were being hit I'd guess they didn't have much movement.
