Would you want Shields in a salary dump? Or keep trotting Ubaldo out there?

So we are not trading Ubaldo, we are holding on to him and picking up Shields? Sure, in an imaginary world with unlimited payroll, why not? In reality, no thanks. That would commit us to 3/5 of a rotation of Ubaldo, Gallardo, and Shields for a total cost of about $50M per year.

Shields allowed 10 runs in two innings today. That is what precipitated this.

Yeah, you know, the team that had to sell a draft pick is gonna take on 20M this year.

The 34-year-old right-hander required an astonishing 79 pitches just to get through two innings, and was mercifully pulled one batter into the third. Along the way, he allowed seven runs on eight hits, which included three home runs, while walking two and striking out two.

Let's assume for a minute that you don't have to give up much to get Shields...and you assume most of his salary.
Actually, the White Sox have already acquired Shields. And he got clobbered in his first start for the Sox.

I wouldn't take Shields even for free. In his most recent start, he got knocked out in the 2nd inning. That's 3 shellackings in a row. His ERA is something like 21.00. Thanks the baseball gods that the White Sox got him and not the Orioles. Now the Sox have a multi-million dollar mop-up man.
