Orioles select Cody Sedlock. He was the Big Ten pitcher of the Year this spring.

College stats: 5-3 record, 2.49 ERA, 101.1 IP, 80 H, 4 HR, 31 BB, 116 K, and a .219 opponent batting average .219 AVG

From MLB.com:

"Illinois left-hander Tyler Jay went from dominating with Team USA in 2014 to the No. 6 overall pick in 2015. Now the Illini have another pitcher prepared to use a summer breakout as a springboard to the early rounds of the Draft. Sedlock starred in the Cape Cod League while transitioning from the bullpen to the rotation, then earned Big Ten Conference pitcher of the year honors and set a school strikeout record this spring, fanning 116 in 101 1/3 innings to surpass former first-rounder John Ericks' mark.

Though Sedlock was primarily a reliever on a deep Illinois pitching staff in his first two college seasons, he has all of the ingredients to start. He throws four pitches, fills the strike zone, generates a lot of groundouts and has a strong 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame.

Sedlock's best pitch is his heavy sinker, which sits at 91-93 mph when he starts and can reach 96 in shorter stints. He also can miss bats with his low-80s slider. Sedlock's curveball and changeup aren't as effective, but they have their moments as well."

Here's a Baseball America game report from May 20 on Sedlock

Sedlock struck out seven and walked three and lowered his ERA to 2.49. Despite that great ERA, he’s just 5-3 as the Illini have scored just eight runs in his past five starts. A year after setting a school record with 50 wins, the Illini are 26-23 and staring at the end of their season if they don’t win the next two.

But you can’t pin that on Sedlock. Outside of a March 11 start vs. UNC Greensboro, he has not allowed more than three runs in his 14 starts, and has thrown at least 104 pitches in eight of them. His 120 pitches Thursday were 12 short of his season high and in four of his past five starts he’s pitched at least—at least—nine innings. He pitched 10 2/3 innings against Ohio State, striking out 14 with no walks in a 1-0 win on April 22.

Reconstruct from Phresh

ou can't make this stuff up....

If you had to pick a major-leaguer (current or former) that you had to compare your game to the most, who would it be?

"Jake Arrieta, absolutely. Same frame, same repertoire. We're both guys who pitch from the right side of the rubber. I don't throw across my body as much as he does, but we both throw aboutt 50% fastballs and two-seams with pretty good movement. About the same velocity, though he might throw a couple ticks higher than I do. Slider, curveball and we both have a changeup in our back pocket that we can use."

Pretty much a disaster. At .191 in 35 games in low A ball. This pick is a complete dud. If he is in the system after next year, I will be shocked.

This year seems like a solid pick.

Stewart was a head scratcher. Unorthodox stance, weak arm, not enough power for 1b, why not take a pitcher. Shrug. Whatever.

So I guess he'll spend much of his career on our DL
