2016 5th Round - Alexis Torres - SS - Colegio Angel David HS

Recommended Posts

A REAL shortstop.

6'0" 183lbs DOB: 12/12/97

“Alexis Torres stands out as perhaps the most talented defensive shortstop in the 2016 high school class and leads a very talented overall group of Puerto Rican prospects. He’s a 6.7 runner with a very quick first step to the ball defensively and has the athletic grace and balance – along with a rifle throwing arm – top shortstop prospects always have.”

Other than the kid that popped for PEDs I assume.

Can always use a real defensive shortstop in the system.

Our system can really use an athletic SS who can defend. I think we are all assuming Mountcastle moves off SS eventually, and Marin hasn't panned out.

The thing about Marin is other than Sisco he's the only other HS bat we've gotten to AA this year. Really just those HS catchers we took a few drafts ago are looking good.

Quick take -- kid looks like he can really play shortstop, and numbers suggest he can run pretty well also. Not in love with the swing mechanics, and way too many ground balls in those BP videos for me to be crazy about the bat at this point. We'll see how he goes. Glove is a carrying tool, but he'll need to hit to be anything. For a fifth-round pick, I don't mind drafting for positional certainty and hoping the bat pans out.

If nothing else he should be a good organizational player.
