QS: 8

Last 6 starts (36 IP): (4-0) 5.00 (1.36), 10HR

</b>

Despite all the wins, Tillman has been pretty awful overall over the last six starts and sports a 4.80 ERA in June. He has allowed a whopping 10 home runs over those six starts which have replaced the walks he was giving up earlier in the season. So, walks are way down and home runs are way up. He has good numbers against the M's and at Insurance Company Field and has decent numbers on the road this season.

70K / 17BB, 14HR

QS: 6

Walker skipped his last turn in the rotation due to tendinitis in his foot and will make his return here. He allowed three earned in five innings against us in May at Camden Yards. Walker had a really rough month of May overall allowing nine home runs in 29.1 IP ending the month with a 4.91 ERA. He had a 1.44 in April and a 3.80 this month in three starts with two of them being bad ones and two of them being good ones. In the two bad ones, he allowed nine earned in 8.1 IP with four home runs allowed against Texas and TB. In the two good ones, he allowed no runs on nine hits and a walk in 13 IP against Cleveland and Boston. They have alternated, so the starts weren't consectutive in either case and he is coming off the start at Boston of five shutout innings. Walker has been at his best at Insurance Company Field, but has not done well against the Orioles in three starts.

The Orioles are now in their third 7-game winning streak of the season, but the reason I am not all that impressed by any of them is that they mostly came against teams that were either not very good generally or were good teams playing astoundingly bad baseball at the time. Except for KC and the April streak (Rays and Boston were both at .500 a handful of games into the season), no other games in those winning streaks involved teams that were at or above .500 at the time and the Royals were god awful in that series. That by no means is meant to imply that they somehow shouldn't count because that's just silly, but they might as well have been playing against AAAA teams with pitchers that live in the middle of the plate with average stuff and/or offenses that can't score to save their lives. I think these things have made the Orioles look better than their record indicates they are. The second half will be much tougher and will obviously prove one way or the other just how good this team is and I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

Seattle has been showing signs of life lately, but they are dealing with a lot of injuries including King Felix. They did take the series against StL recently, so we'll see. Seattle's offense is pretty good, too. They have been in a funk, but look to be coming out of that these last six games. Their bullpen also ranks better in three of the four categories listed above and generally have better pitching than the Orioles. It will all come down to whether their offense keeps warming up or cools down.

Walker has been solid for the M's and is coming off a minor foot tendinitis injury here while Tillman has struggled to a 5 ERA over the last month of games. Walker is bad against the Orioles, but good at Insurance Company Field while Tillman has had much success against the M's in his career and at Insurance Company Field. I can't be sure what we will see out of Tillman at this point.

With Boston's loss today to the Rays, they are now tied for second with Toronto at 5.5 games back. Toronto has won two in a row and may be starting to get going again. The Yankees snap their three game skid by beating Texas with a six run ninth inning mostly due to a three run homer by McCann to tie the game and a walk off two run homer by Gregorius and sit 3.5 back in the WC race. The Indians have won 12 in a row now while KC beat StL in 12 innings and the Tigers have won two in a row sitting two back of the WC. Texas snaps their winning streak with their meltdown against the Yankees while Houston has now won 9 of 10 and three in a row and continue to be unstoppable. Seattle has scored four or more runs in five of the last six and five or more in three of the last four. They were shut down by Jameson Taillon tonight, though.

Obviously when the offense cools off things will get interesting, but I actually am feeling a little better about our rotation after seeing Gallardo's velocity sitting low 90's. If he can continue that, he's a solid mid/back end starter. All this team needs in all honesty is just solid starters. Even when the offense "cools off" we'll have solid production. We just won't be scoring 6+ runs every game out. If we can get quality starts and then give it to the pen to shut it down we have a very good shot every time out. Tillman, Gausman, and Gallardo I feel solid about. The rest of the rotation is the big question mark. Hopefully Ubaldo can just give us a shot most times out. He's going to have that terrible game every once in a while, that's just who he is.

I, on the other hand, am impressed by any team's winning streaks. Tampa just manhandled Boston. I do not think the Orioles faced minor league pitching grooving the ball for them.

I just got 4 tickets for tomorrow night and already have tickets for Friday night. While I'm trying to go with friends, I haven't confirmed anything with anyone, so probable that I will have some free tickets for some games during the M's series. Let me know if you're interested and your flexibility, since it might be a last minute thing. If I have tickets, they should be pretty good. As in... 1st or 2nd row by first base or right on the corner of the visiting dugout.

ie: If I have any, it will be free to any O's fan.

Just so we know you will stay if it goes extras. K?

    • Ideally, sure, but in a situation where you assume that you're only getting 5-6 years from that player before he leaves, I can understand trying to manage their time so that you get the maximum impact out of it.
    • yea McCann has been hot but eventually I would hope to see a better lineup vs lefties. I don't think they will DH Adley all year against them and have Cowser and Mullins play and use a different DH
    • Do you think that Mountcastle could land us a frontline starting pitcher? Otherwise, there's really no use in trading him. He has been one of the best hitters on the team and is still relatively young. Also, it might take trading Norby AND Stowers to get back a difference making starting pitcher. Would you be comfortable with that? Or do you think it would be better for him to be the 10th - 12th hitter on the team next year. I ask because with so many top level talents/potential star players, the need or use for 10- 12 bench players is not that high (think ATL Braves). However, we are one more top notch starter (especially once Bradish returns) from being the best team in baseball bar none. Plus, if we are not going to resign Burnes, we will need someone up at or near the top of the rotation next season (even if Bradish is there and healthy) if we want to put ourselves in the best position possible to win it all.
    • I think most people’s minds are conditioned that a player has to play everyday. We don’t see teams playing a lot of guys some. We see teams that normally put out the same lineups everyday and play the same players most of the time. But the reality is that shouldn’t be the case.    We also don’t need young guys to come up and play every single day to justify them being here.  They can play 2-4 times a week and get PH appearances.  When the player is “old enough” and has nothing left to prove in the minors, you get them up here even if it’s just on a part time basis for a while until things get figured out.
    • Certainly hard to sit O'Hearn with the way he's been hitting against righties. But Kjerstad doesn't have major split issues so he may be able to take some of those lefty PAs.
    • This team is good enough to win with Holliday, Norby, or Urias at 2B. I think the thought of staying with Holliday is that he has the highest ceiling by far of the 3. And if you can get him going so that by the end of the season he is ready for "take off", he gives you that one additional weapon that Norby nor Urias are. IMO, there are several issues with turning to Norby to replace Holliday now.  1) He has no long term place on this team. So you are in effect starting his Major League clock unnecessarily, when he most likely has more value to another org if he stays at AAA and can start his MLB clock on their choosing. 2) What if he struggles? Then what? Do you turn back to Holliday? If he struggles, it may damage his trade value. 3) What if Holliday regains his stroke at AAA? What do you do then even if Norby has managed to do a decent job or even a good job? Do you keep Holliday for the rest of the year? 4) And to me this is the biggest - What is the best use of his value? To be a bench player here long term? Or to be part of a trade that brings the Major League team something that it needs (in the pitching department)?
    • Agree with you that Mayo is special, and that if I were going to be on one of our players being an impact, middle of the order bat, it's him (though if Cowser and Westburg continue to hit anything like this we'll have a few of them! And I'm a big believer in Kjerstad's bat too). I don't think it's really that complicated, though, no? Santander will leave next season and Kjerstad takes that place. Trade Mountcastle and that's Mayo's spot. Basallo is still a ways off and things will probably work themselves out with injury or what not by then. Norby, Stowers, and Ortiz were always going to be the three that it was going to really be a struggle to find a spot for, and the Ortiz trade solved the Ortiz issue, and now I think you're in a situation where, barring injury, Stowers probably ought to be trade bait and Norby could become a really valuable 12th hitter off the bench next season.
