Gallardo was OK in June pitching to a 4.41 ERA, but also 24 baserunners allowed in 16.1 IP good for a 1.47 WHIP which is not OK. He has not been good on the road at all nor has he pitched well against the Dodgers or at Dodger Stadium. His velocity has been better at least, so we'll see how it plays out here.

Urias, who is only 19 years old, is LA's top prospect. He has also had the fortune of spending time around guys like Zack Grienke and Clayton Kershaw as well as a major league coaching staff and is very eager to learn from them. Apparently, it has worked. After a rough start allowing eight earned runs in his first 7.2 innings, he has really pulled it together and gotten his ERA down to 4.09. He is also striking out well over one an inning and is coming off his first quality start. He allowed two hits, two runs and six walks in his last start against the Brewers. The six walks may be an anomaly as he walked only one batter in each of the previous five starts. He is also able to get a lot of ground balls posting a 35/42 GB/FB ratio. This doesn't look like your typical 19 year old rookie. Based on what I could find about him, he throws mid 90's with his fastball touching 98 when he needs it and complements it with an above average change up and a plus curveball with consistent quality to both pitches. He also knows how to pitch and uses what he has extremely effectively. However, he can leave his fastball in the wrong place at times. He should be fun to watch.

Not surprisingly, the Orioles are swept by the M's in four games and will now head to LA to face the Dodgers who actually have one of the best pitching in baseball both starters and relievers. Their offense is another story as it is one of the worst, but guys like Trayce Thompson, Justin Turner, Corey Seager and Adrian Gonzalez are all going pretty well right now and even the struggling Puig is doing a bit better lately though not blowing anyones doors off. Even Yasmani Grandal, who is hitting .185 is 3/9 over the last three games with two homers and two walks. This would explain the Dodgers recent success on top of their pitching. The Dodgers are no Mariners, but this is still one of the best pitching teams in baseball right now despite not having Kershaw for awhile and they have been hitting better lately as well. Urias, Maede and Bud Norris are all pitching very well coming into this series. As a matter of fact, the Dodgers pitching staff has allowed a total of three runs over the last four games and have outscored their opponents 23-3. The Dodgers are playing some really good baseball coming into this series led by phenominal pitching. Scoring runs has been the problem.

Gallardo's numbers on the road and against the Dodgers in their park are not good at all, but he was serviceable in June though his last two starts were against the Rays and Padres. He will look to continue that here against 19 year old rookie phenom Julio Urias who has improved his ERA in every start since his rough start. I'm really eager to see this kid pitch.

With Boston's win today, they have closed the gap to three games with Toronto on their heels 3.5 back and the Yankees hanging around 3.5 back of the WC. The Indians are understandably hurting a bit now after ripping their bullpen a new one and have lost two in a row while the surging Tigers have won six in a row and now sit in the second WC spot with KC a half game back and Houston a game back having dropped two games to the White Sox who seem to be getting hot again now as well. The M's also sit only one back of the WC tied for second with Houston as Texas has lost two in a row and are being reeled in a bit, but Houston and Seattle have quite a bit of work to do if they want to get back in the division race. They are certainly both capable of that. Texas dropped two to the Twins and will now square up with Boston again while Houston and Seattle will lock horns Monday afternoon.

Junior Guerra.

Had his first 4 major league innings last year for the White Sox at the age of 30.

They released him after the season.

If the Orioles had signed him as a minor league free agent in the off season, even on this board full of fanatic fans, it would barely have been noticed. Mentioned in a post and forgotten.

We didn't pick him up. Milwaukee did. And it has turned out to be one of the best, if not the best, pitching acquisition off the offseason, for any team in the majors. Better than Price. Better than Grienke. Better than Fister.

Going into today, a 3.25 ERA, 1.067 WHIP in 11 starts. Today, 7.2 2-hit shutout innings vs the Nats and a 1-0 victory.

If only the O's had picked this guy up for the ML minimum. Geez.

I read up on him during the Nats game this morning. Crazy story. Spent time in the Italian League.
