9 up, 9 down in the first 3 innings.

Ran into trouble in the 4th.

Rebounded to retire 6 outs of 7 batters between the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. At that point, he gave up a walk, a single, and another walk to load the bases with 2 outs. A visit from the pitching coach helped to settle him down, as he retired the next batter on 3 pitches (all strikes) on a grounder to the shortstop, ending the threat and putting a finishing touch on his 6 innings of 1-run ball.

Well, Gallardo was able to go seven innings against the Yankees, but allowed four runs to steer clear of the quality start. He, once again, allowed nine base runners in the game and 40 for the month in only 21 innings and a 5.57 ERA to go with it. He will now face the Rockies who he has been awful against for his career, but it should be noted that four of those starts came at Coors where the numbers are even worse. He has a solid home ERA, but the high WHIP and BAA indicate he has gotten a lot of luck at home that he hasn't gotten on the road.

De La Rosa had a very rough first two months as he finished May with a 10.52 ERA, but he has been pitching much better since then. After going to the DL with a groin injury and missing most of May, he came back in a relief role and earned his way back to the rotation putting up a 1.96 ERA in 23 June innings. He started July with three sub-4 quality starts, but fell apart in his last start against the Rays giving up seven earned in four innings along with 11 hits and a couple walks which lifts his July ERA to 5.25, but it was his first bad appearance since May 24th. Maybe De Rosa is going back to his struggles? Overall, he has been atrocious with runners on base and he has never pitched at Camden Yards. His one start against the Orioles was a bad one.

The Orioles pull off the sweep of the Indians who did not play at all like their recent history indicated. They didn't play like a hot team at all, but the Orioles took advantage of mistakes and the starting pitching is the real story of the series here for Baltimore capped off with a walk-off home run from Nolan Reimold that almost gave Jim Hunter a heart attack and suddenly, the Orioles have won three in a row as they welcome the Rockies into town. Colorado has a pretty good offense, but their pitching is horrendous and is one of the only teams the Orioles rotation can look at and say "Well, at least we're not THAT.. we're not THAT bad." The Rockies have been playing well since the break, but most of their games have been played against the Braves including three of the wins in their four game winning streak.

This is a real toss up. Neither pitcher has been very good this season though De La Rosa has been better more recently, but who knows what to expect in this one. They're both pretty bad overall in 2016.

Both Boston and Toronto win today, so no changes there and the Yankees also won as they continue to play well. Meanwhile, every team in the Central lost their last game except Chicago who has won two in a row. Texas is beating up on KC and have won two in a row while Houston has won four in a row and continue their charge for a playoff spot still a half game behind Toronto in the WC and 2.5 behind Texas who must be feeling the heat now. Houston will play the Yankees next while Texas will face Oakland who has won three in a row and seven of 10.

    • And Ramon Urias as well. Urias might eventually get squeezed out or turn into a backup, but he's been a vital part the last few years while we've been waiting on prospects to make their way up the farm system.
    • I’ll now answer my own question.  Even though these three players are theoretically equivalent from a run differential standpoint, I would not want the player who’s -10 on defense.  That’s because I believe that poor defense bothers pitchers, causes them to try to do too much, and demoralizes them.  So maybe the fielder isn’t “responsible” in a WAR calculation when the rattled pitcher serves up gopher ball or walks the next guy after a poor defensive play, but there’s cause and effect there IMO.  So, give me someone who plays at least decent defense.   And, I think the Orioles feel the same way.
    • Really!? It's called baseball? Thanks for letting me know!   They are going to lose more games than they win when the starting pitcher has a sucky night. They can't score ten runs a night. The thread is about discussing Grayson Rodriquez's pitching. Just saying his performance doesn't really matter is incorrect and an uninteresting take.
    • Exactly. If you go down a list of the leaderboards of velo leaders and note all their injuries, there’s a lot of them. But if you instead just take a list of all 30+ year old pitchers and sort it however you like, I don’t expect it’s going to look all that different.
    • Aram loves the pitch metrics on Povich and McDermott. Was effusive in his spring podcast going through Os top prospects.
    • Let’s also give the org credit for the O’Hearn pickup.  He was part of last night’s lineup.  For that matter, they picked up Mateo too.
    • Thank you.  Not sure how easy for someone who may have been doing it for years and someone who’s been talented enough to make it work.   Someone posted a video of Freddie Freeman and Holliday to show similarities but, to me, it just showed how different their lead foot was.  Freeman’s was closed and perfectly in line and parallel to his back foot.  Hollidays foot pointed out and the foot towards 2B position.  I questioned it.  Other guys, who admittedly know more, said it was no problem.  Again, he might be able to become a HOF with those mechanics.  I’ve just never seen a good ML hitter hit that way. From that early January thread “I guess it depends on your definition of “step in the bucket”.  His stride foot definitely doesn’t go straight.  Pretty easy to see where his foot is in relation to the batters box and how much further away it is when it lands.  It doesn’t seem to affect him negatively though.  Interestingly enough, Freeman’s stride foot goes perfectly straight.” Edited January 6 by RZNJ
