Chris Tillman

(14-3)

3.47 (1.22/.233)

112K / 48BB, 14HR

QS: 12

</b>

Of Tillman's last eight starts, four were brilliant seven inning one run performances and the other four were five innings or less performances with either four or six runs allowed. He will now pitch against his nemesis the Blue Jays who he has horrible numbers against especially at Canadian Communications and Media Company Centre. He allowed four runs in five innings against the Jays eight starts ago with two home runs allowed and has a 4.91 (1.09/.220) in two starts against Toronto this season, but both were at Camden Yards. He will face Toronto's best pitcher who coincidentally is better than himself this year.

Aaron Sanchez

(11-1)

2.72 (1.15/.227)

QS: 15

Last 7 starts (47 IP): (5-0) 1.53 (1.00), 2HR

Sanchez is one of the few having an even better season than Tillman and has been red hot over the last seven starts since giving up six runs on 10 hits (4HR) in five innings against the Orioles on June 12th. His next start was also against the Orioles and allowed one earned in six innings and has been on a roll since then. He has a whopping 15 sub-4 starts of at least six innings this season. I know the Jays insist they will take him out of the rotation eventually, but I don't see how they can since the kid is certainly among the top contenders for the Cy Young at this point in time plus the Jays are very much in contention and won't be able to replace his production. On top of that, he has not lost a game since April 22nd against the A's and is 7-0 over his last 10 starts with three of those games coming at home and four on the road though he is better on the road. This is certainly the matchup the Jays want against Tillman, so we'll see if Sanchez steps up again here. His career numbers against the Orioles aren't pretty, but he showed he can do better in his last start against us.

The Orioles give up first place in a blowout at the hands of the Blue Jays and another outstanding performance from J.A. Happ and another pathetic performance for Gallardo as he couldn't even get through five innings allowing five runs in 4.1 innings. The Orioles bullpen once again fails as they allowed four additional runs to score and walked seven Toronto batters total for the whole game. The Orioles have lost 9 of 14 as that M word begins rearing it's ugly head again with losing streaks of four and five games now to make null the five game winning streak in between to fall to 13 games over .500 and falling. World Series? Get real, they have to make it to the playoffs first and that is by no means a sure thing. If Boston wins tonight, the Orioles could find themselves in third place after tomorrow's game.

The Orioles best pitcher against the Blue Jays best pitcher. Theirs is statistically better across the board and has much better numbers in this ballpark than Tillman does, but both have struggled against the opposing team for their careers. Both have one good and one bad start against the opposing teams this season, but Tillman struggles far more against Toronto in their park than Sanchez does against the Orioles. Doesn't look good for Tillman in this one and this will be his first start of the year in Toronto. Can Tillman be the stopper again? In Toronto, that may be too much even for him.

Most games have yet to be played today, so there's not a whole lot to say as far as the AL goes. Detroit will look to win their fifth in a row tonight against Houston and Seattle is down 1-0 to the Cubs in the late innings. The rest is yet to be seen.

Gary Thorne must read the Hangout message boards.

He opens the broadcast by saying that July has been one of the worst months in Oriole history, dating back to 1954!?!?!

We're 11-14 in July.

April 1988 says hello.

    • I have more confidence in Kjerstad's defense in the outfield than what is seems like most people here do. I've seen him play the outfield in person several times tracking down fly balls and he always made plays that I thought were not routine fly balls to get to. He might not be fast but he knows what angles to take to get to them. I'd probably say that Right Field is his best position. Though in some cases and baseball fields he can play left field if you need him. I certainly feel more confident about Kjerstad's defense in the OF than I do O'Hearn. But I feel more confident about O'Hearn playing 1st Base than I do Kjerstad. Both make for a pretty good DH.
    • Norby and Stowers aren’t bringing a difference-making starting pitcher (maybe you meant Mounty in the package also).  I don’t think anyone would hesitate (least of all Elias) if that opportunity presented itself. I’d part with Norby and Stowers for a difference making relief pitcher like Hunter Harvey, Lucas Erczeg, Griffin Jax, Anthony Bender, Calvin Faucher, or Ryan Helsey.  They can also have Mike Bauman and for some of those targets, I’d also throw in Seth Johnson.
    • Suárez is giving up a lot of hard contact, but on high fly balls or ground balls. He has a .218 xBA and .314 xSLG, and a 82nd percentile barrel rate. I don’t know if that’s a tightrope he’s walking and it’s just a matter of time before the barrels come, or he’s going to be able to do that consistently to some degree - time will tell.  What’s clear is the fastball plays well up in the zone and he’s been good at locating it there, getting a ton of whiffs and easy fly balls. The changeup looks promising too. I’m skeptical of the cutter, but it looks like it plays pretty well as a change of pace for glove side movement given the huge arm side run on the fastball and changeup.  I still see a potentially dominant RP when I watch him, and worry that he’s not going to hold up as a SP given how much he runs out of gas later in these appearances. He also wasn’t able to hit the same velo he did in his second start after emptying the tank in his debut. I fear if we keep running him out there as a SP, he’s going to eventually either throw more ~93-94 mph and lose effectiveness, or blow out his arm. I’m worried of jeopardizing a potentially dominant RP in that pursuit. However we have to keep rolling with him while he’s one of the 5 best SP and hope for the best, and he certainly is right now. I just hope he ends up in the pen due to there being 5 better, healthy SP before he has any injuries.
    • Lower the bar to 400 PAs and there were 27.  Health and platoons?  Still less than 1 per team.  In the early going, there are 42 over .850.  Still wouldn't count on it, but crazier things have happened from lesser talent over the course of a season. As a team, O's team OPS is .780.  Sure a few mild surprises, but also a nothing burger from Holliday.
