Wade Miley

(7-9)

5.08 (1.36/.278)

87K / 34BB, 19HR

QS: 7

</b>

Miley's first start as an Oriole was not a good one. He allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings, but no walks and five strikeouts. He will look to pitch more like he did in July going forward which was by far his best month. His first August start wasn't good and bumped his season ERA back up over five. His numbers against Oakland are good allowing only two runs in 14 IP, but Oakland's current lineup has way more than two runs against him. He has had a lot of problems with righties himself with 16 of his 19 home runs allowed to righties.

(1-1)

5.25 (1.25/.302)

10K / 1BB, 4HR

QS: 0

Neal has made one start and 10 relief appearances this season. The one start was bad back in May where he allowed seven runs on eight hits (2HR) in four innings. One impressive thing about Neal is he has walked only one batter in 24 innings, but only 10 K's which seems to indicate that he is more of a Paul Byrd type that pitches to contact. In his first five appearances of the season including the one start, Neal allowed 13 runs on 16 hits (4HR) in 12 innings. Since then, he has allowed only one run in 12 innings allowing only 11 hits and no home runs which is good enough to earn Neal another start here against the Orioles.

Leadoff walks kill the Orioles as Kendall Graveman was brilliant and outpitched Gausman who pitched well, but not good enough and gave Oakland the lead before departing after another sub-4/6+ start. Ondrusek, who seems like a decent arm, gave up another run in the seventh which turns out to be the winning run and the Orioles drop game one of this four game series against the struggling A's. Let's hope this doesn't ignite a fire under them to string some wins together and stop disgracing the noble duty of being a spoiler.

I don't know much about Neal, but he has been pitching very well out of the bullpen leading into this game while Miley struggled in his last start and may have lingering effects from being hit with that comebacker as well. Really don't know enough about Neal nor is Miley anything close to a sure thing, so who knows?

Boston had the off day yesterday, but Toronto beat the Rays which should be no surprise to anyone. Those pesky Twins beat Houston last night as well. The Twins are 19-12 over the last 31 games and the only team who is better is Toronto who is 21-10 after last night's win. Detroit, Colorado and the LAD are the only other teams who were 18-12 before last night's game. The Dodgers are the only team that won to stay with the Twins at 19-12. It's hard to believe, but the Twins are among the best teams in baseball since the beginning of July. Hisashi Iwakuma has now thrown back to back starts of at least seven innings and allowing no runs as he shut out the Tigers for seven to bring his ERA down to 3.79 and the bullpen did the rest. It looks like the M's have caught fire and will try to get into this thing with Detroit being the team they want to beat to do that. The Tigers will be hurt losing Castellanos to the DL with a fractured left hand which should keep him out for at least four weeks. Most teams had an off day Monday, so not much else going on.

In regard to last night's unusual scoring of a runner on a tag-up on that long foul ball, does anybody else remember Game Five of the 1984 World Series when the Tigers scored the go-ahead run late in the game on a fly ball to very shallow right field ???

What happened was that there were 2 players that easily could have caught the ball ...... Tony Gwynn, the rightfielder and Alan Wiggins, the 2nd baseman. The run scored because Wiggins caught the ball instead of Gwynn. Wiggins (unlike Gwynn) had his back to home plate, so his ensuing throw home was much harder to make than if Gwynn had simply made the catch as the rightfielder who was charging toward (and was facing) home plate.

The difference between that play and the one last night was that the Padres had a choice as to who was going to catch the ball, and they obviously made a bad one. Last night, the Athletics' 1st baseman was the only player that was in the vicinity of the ball, so he had no choice but to catch it with his back to home plate before making the throw home.

The difficult decision comes, late in a time game, does Yonder Alonso have to let that ball drop?

    • DJ Stewart has a 1.031 OPS in 12 games.
    • All I can give you is an anecdote about my nephew. He's not a baseball fan per se, but he likes sports (mostly NFL) and he likes Baltimore teams. He hadn't been to an Orioles game since he was a little boy during the JJ Hardy years (Hardy was his favorite Oriole). Then last season I took him to his first game as an adult on Sunday Night Baseball against the Yankees, and one of the things he said to me he liked about the Orioles was "that the players are all home grown". Considering he was a casual fan at the point, I think extending those home grown players could have a positive impact on the business side of things. But that's only if the Orioles continue to be successful and competitive as a team. Since that game, he's been to several more games on his own and took his girlfriend a few times.
    • And what is the data on Cy Young award winning pitchers in their age 30 and up seasons? Side Note: Last season's best Orioles starting pitcher, Kyle Bradish, is only 2 years younger than Burnes. I don't think you can assume Grayson will remain healthy either based on how violent his velocity is and the injury history that he has from the minor leagues. With all that said, I agree that it is crucial to ask these questions and think hard about these things and try to make a healthy rational decision. Pros and Cons. Cost benefit analysis. We're lucky to see a Cy Young award winner playing for the Orioles even once in a generation, and considering how rare that is, we should consider the value in it and balance the upside with the downside. Some pitchers are built sturdier than others. Look at former Orioles pitcher Jamie Moyer (he was almost 50 years old before he retired). Look at Nolan Ryan. Could Burnes be one of those enduring pitchers? He's had a very good career track record of health.
    • That is the big question. I had assumed it would be pretty long, especially with him wearing Cal Ripken Sr's old number and him being the consensus top prospect in Baseball. But if there's been no progress in all that playing time, and it's starting to cost us games, I don't know how the team can take the brunt of that for too long. Especially in a chase for a championship inside the toughest division in baseball.  The Front Office has surprised me before by looking like they were being patient with a guy only to suddenly option him one day without warning they would.  If we're being perfectly honest Jackson looks like a boy playing amongst men out their right now and he looks like he belongs in the minor leagues with a reset for now until he gathers up experience like Westburg and Norby, or at least as much as Henderson did. So, we will probably watch Jackson ride the bench vs Ragans tomorrow. What happens after that is something we will just have to wait and see. I'm willing to cut him some slack, but if it continues to cost us runs and games, then there's not much room for patience.
    • Hicks was a big blessing to the team--we're very lucky we got him when we did. There's no way the Cowser we saw last year could have matched what Hicks provided, even on defense and on the basepaths. You cite BABIP, but drawing 35 walks in 236 plate appearances was a huge self-earned positive.
    • I had to think about it because Adley has always been a high priority for me. He's the franchise Catcher we never had. And in my opinion, the Catcher position is the Quarterback of a Baseball team. It's that impactful of a position and you need a good one to compete for championships. But with that said, Burnes is the Ace we've been waiting for since Mussina turned coat, and his contract is up at the end of the season. He's also one of the most reliable and durable pitchers in baseball. I think we should do what we can to keep him happy and make a business deal with him to keep him an Orioles pitcher.   If you're assuming that Rodriguez or Bradish will take over the Ace role, I think you've seen enough pitching injuries this year to tell you that you can't assume that will happen. You need to make sure any one of your top 3 starters can assume the #1 spot if pressed. Timing dictates Burnes as our biggest priority to work on. With Gunnar, he might be a future MVP and I've been one of his biggest fans since the moment he was called up. But his agent is Scott Boras, so good luck getting him to agree to an extension before free agency. And on that note, you'll have Scott Boras with a conflict of interest when you're trying to sign both Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holiday long term and they both want to play shortstop.
    • People keep talking about Norby's flawed defense, meanwhile Holliday is looking pretty bad out there. Small sample size, I guess! But how long is the leash?
