Chris Tillman

(15-4)

3.46 (1.21/.236)

126K / 53BB, 17HR

QS: 13

</b>

Tillman is coming off a good start against Oakland, but struggled in the previous three starts though the results were ok run wise in all but one of them and allowed at least eight baserunners in all three starts. He has good numbers against Houston, but it is yet to be seen how he does pitching on all this extra rest plus any potential shoulder discomfort or hesitation to go all out with it. We shall see.

Mike Fiers

(8-6)

4.66 (1.35/.281)

QS: 9

Fiers has been an extremely average pitcher for the Astros this season and very inconsistent. He's a "box of chocolates" kind of pitcher. His best month was June (2.86) and his worst is, well, August so far at 6.32. Fiers has allowed nine runs over the last two starts (9.2 IP), but the three starts before that were all sub-4/6+ with only one home run allowed in 19.1 IP and only five earned allowed. In the last two starts, he has allowed five home runs and 16 base runners in those 9.2 IP. So, you can see what I mean. You just never know what you're going to get. He has never faced the Orioles and he may wish he hadn't if he keeps giving up homers.

Pedro Alvarez (14 AB) .214, 2HR, 4RBI

Steve Pearce 2/3, 2B

Mark Trumbo 0/2

Well, this game was full to the brim with scoring. Springer led off the game with a solo home run off of Miley and then, the Orioles put up five runs on four home runs off of McHugh before he recorded a single out. Home runs by Jones, Machado (with Kim on), Davis and Trumbo in the first seemed to indicate we were in for another blowout for the Orioles. However, by the time the Orioles came up to bat in the second inning, they were trailing by one run again. The Orioles got two more runs in the third, but were tied by the time they batted in the fourth and were down a run by the time they batted in the fifth despite getting one back in that inning. The Astros then put up six unanswered runs in the next four innings as the Orioles bullpen allows nine earned runs after Miley allowed six. The star of the game here without question is Chris Devenski who shut down the Orioles offense for four innings in relief of McHugh who allowed six earned in three innings. Devenski allowed only a solo home run to Alvarez which was the only hit he gave up. Talk about an in-game stopper. The Astros come to life as they cling to their playoff hopes with a big win. The Orioles score eight runs and still get blown out and the team that was almost a sure thing to win at home before this series has now dropped three of four in this homestand as they continue to slip down in the standings. Fortunately, Toronto blew a ninth inning lead and lost to Cleveland, but Boston blew out the Tigers 10-2. The Orioles return to third place with the loss and are now 20-24 since June 30th.

Obviously, Tillman is far better than Fiers, but there are wild cards here. Tillman is coming back from shoulder issues and going on all this extra rest, so will he be sharp? Then, there's Fiers who is pretty random with his good starts, but he has nine of them this season and had three in a row only two starts ago. The last two were very bad, though. Should be interesting.

Toronto loses to Cleveland by allowing back to back home runs in the ninth inning with the last being an inside the park home run. Nyquin hit a ball to deep right center field and Saunders couldn't get it. It bounced off the wall back towards center field, but Upton didn't back Saunders up and when he finally got to the ball, he fell down in the outfield with his back facing the plate and made a weak throw to the infield. Nyquin beat the throw to the plate easily. It's pretty typical Upton to not back up a play and/or neglect to hustle on a play and it seems to have cost Toronto the game here. Obviously, I only watched the replay, but Upton was nowhere to be found backing up Saunders until the last minute and fell down trying to stop to pick up the ball. Any of our outfielders would have been backing up I'm sure of that, but Upton probably thought the ball was gone off the bat and didn't move. The camera zoomed out quite a ways and still no Upton on the way. No idea what he was doing, but it wasn't his job that's for sure.

Anyway, Boston blew out the Tigers who remain 3.5 back of the Orioles for the WC spot while Boston is a half a game behind Toronto who is going to have a tough time with the Indians especially after their win tonight. Also, it's probably nothing, but the Royals have won five in a row and have pulled to six back of the Orioles for the WC spot. Their game tonight against the Twins is currently under a rain delay and has been for a couple hours now with the score tied 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning. Seattle is at home playing the Brewers and are up 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. Houston is 5.5 games back and may have just decided to get serious against the Orioles, so we'll see what happens in game three of that series tomorrow.

All that you touch and all that you see

All that you taste all that you feel

All that you love all that you hate

All you distrust

All that you save

And all that you give and all that you deal

And all that you buy, beg, borrow, or steal and all you create

And all you destroy and all that you do and all that you say

And all that you eat and everyone you meet

All that you slight

And everyone you fight

And all that is now and all that is gone and all that's to come

And everything under the sun is in tune

Now that Wilson is gone.

I see Caleb catching. Has Wieters' paternity leave started? Is Pena up?

Roch to the rescue!

"Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he expects catcher Matt Wieters to remain on paternity leave at least through Sunday’s game at Camden Yards.

Wieters and wife Maria are at the hospital and doctors induced labor this morning. Wieters can stay away from the team for a maximum of three days."
