Gausman has allowed six runs over the last two starts totalling 10.2 IP with seven walks and nine hits. He has not allowed three runs or less and pitched at least six innings more than two starts in a row since his hot start in April. He has been the model of inconsistency this season as he just can't seem to hold it together longer than two starts. He also hasn't allowed four or more runs in more than two consecutive starts either. Home runs have been a big problem this season with 23 allowed including two in his last start against Houston where he allowed four earned in 6.2 innings. All four of his wins this season came at home, but as inconsistent as he is, you could get anything out of him here. His two starts against the Nats have been disastrous with 10 runs allowed in 10 innings on 16 hits and four homers.

Lopez doesn't have an ESPN picture yet, so this one will have to do. He has made four starts here in his MLB debut season. His last two were against the Braves and were outstanding with only two runs allowed in fourteen innings with 11 strikeouts in the last one. Before that, he faced the Giants and Dodgers and allowed nine runs in 8.2 IP with 13 strikeouts. He also has reverse splits early on as a righty dominating lefties and getting hammered by righties.

The Orioles are able to beat A.J. Cole who pitched well and Bundy again showed decreased velocity and command, but was able to luck his way through the first few innings and got it together a bit more in the last three. He walked four and allowed three hits and the Orioles get only their second win of the homestand, but needed to walk the tightrope a few times. The Nats only had to use Glover out of the pen while the Orioles had to call on four guys, so that may factor in as the series goes on as well. Even this next game is winnable against another rookie, but Roark and Scherzer will be the tough ones.

Lopez is a rookie whose confidence is high, but his two good starts did come against the Braves. Expect a lot of strikeouts. Meanwhile, Gausman's last two weren't so good. The start against the Giants wasn't horrible since he only allowed two runs, but walked six. Inconsistency has not been kind to him and his numbers against the Nats in two starts are really, really bad.

A lot of teams had off days today, so not a lot changes. Along with the Orioles, Boston, Seattle and Houston all won their games and of course the Yankees lost to Seattle and fall to five back. Toronto begins their series against the Angels and KC against Miami tomorrow. I imagine KC won't fare well there, but we shall see. They have won eight in a row and nine of 10. Boston now shares first place with Toronto and the Orioles are two games back with Seattle still nipping at our heels. Detroit begins their series against the Twins who are struggling again and Houston has won four in a row. Detroit, Toronto and Boston have a chance to really change the race over the next week with the Orioles having three more against the Nationals and then to New York to face the Yankees, then we come back home to face Toronto.

I was listening to the Washington Sports guys this morning, and they don't do a bad job of covering the Orioles.

They were totally blown away by some Oriole-Nat fans that are wearing a hat that is a split Orioles and split Nationals hat, and they couldn't understand how a fan could do that.
