o

Miley's outings since being acquired from the Mariners on July 31st

11) ) DECENT ) (4 runs in 5 innings is below average in terms of overall results, but I thought that he was particularly unlucky with several bloop hits by the opponent AND the Orioles' defense letting him down in his 5th and final inning of work.)

12) ) PRETTY GOOD

13) ) VERY BAD

14) ) HORRIBLE

15) ) DECENT

16) ) PRETTY GOOD

17) ) BELOW AVERAGE )

18) ) DISASTROUS ) Although Miley was hit hard, he also was let down badly by his defense. The 5 runs that he allowed in the first inning easily could have been 0 runs if Manny Machado had not booted a double play ball, and Steve Pearce had not dropped a ball in the outfield.

19) ) GOOD ) Start was aborted by back spasms after only 4 innings.

10) ) VERY GOOD )

</b>

Miley pitched well against the Nationals, but it still took him 96 pitches to get through five innings despite their struggling offense. He allowed eight base runners and two runs on one home run. He has an 8.18 ERA since joining the Orioles including twice allowing six earned runs in the last three starts. He did pitch six strong innings against Toronto during his best month in July allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. Miley has been atrocious at Camden Yards for his career and that hasn't changed since coming here as he has allowed 10 runs in 6.2 innings over two home starts so far. His career numbers against Toronto aren't good either, so at least going by Miley's career numbers, this is a terrible matchup and his BAA is through the roof in most situations.

Marco Estrada

(7-6)

3.47 (1.10/.201)

QS: 10

Estrada has really struggled over the last two starts and generally since his back started acting up on him in July, but he hasn't been terrible until these last two starts where he has allowed 11 runs over the last 9 IP on 15 hits and three walks. He has also allowed five home runs over the last two as well in starts against the Yankees and Angels. In three starts against the Orioles this season, his line is 3.71 (1.47/.231) with two homers allowed and 10 walks in 17 IP. He has always pitched well against the Orioles and has always had a problem with walks. He has also pitched well on the road this season and has decent numbers at Camden Yards.

The Orioles avoid being swept as Gausman has his second strong start in a row and shuts down the Yankees for seven innings en route to the 5-0 win. As soon as Sabathia was done, the runs poured in against the bullpen and the Orioles gain some space back in the wild card race. Now, it's back home to face Toronto where the Orioles send their three worst starters against Toronto's three best starters. This is a big series here for the Orioles. Even dropping two of these games will all but certainly put the division out of reach and may even cost them their wild card spot in the process.

Miley's numbers in this park and against this team are not good by any stretch while Estrada has good numbers against the Orioles and on the road, but is a bit more shaky at Camden Yards though still good. However, he has struggled in his last two starts pretty badly. I've no confidence in Miley here, but stranger things have happened.

Fortunately, all of Detroit, Seattle and Houston lost today while Toronto wins as their offense is red hot after going cold for a week or so and remain three games ahead in the division. KC stomped the Red Sox, so they keep pace at three games back. The Yankees will play KC who continues to play well, Boston will face the Rays who are also playing well, Detroit plays Chicago, Houston plays Oakland and Seattle goes head to head with Texas which won't be easy.

Wild Card Standings

*Boston +1.0

*Baltimore --

Detroit -2.0

KC Royals -3.0

Seattle -3.0

Houston -3.0

NY Yankees -3.5

The Orioles have not lost a game where I've been in attendance this year. Needing a huge win and wanting to put my support behind the team, I've purchased tickets at 6:30 in the morning on the day of the game. A total impulse buy, and probably not within my budget, but I'm hoping the team will come together for a win somehow.

I too hope the team can come together for some wins. It sure would be nice if they could right the ship.

Monday, 7:05 PM: Marco Estrada vs. Wade Miley

This looks like a mismatch, but it would have looked like even more of a mismatch a few weeks ago. Estrada (3.47 ERA) has been very good overall this year, but his ability to prevent hits and beat his peripherals has eluded him lately.

He?s given up 22 hits over 14 innings in his last three starts, and in his last two outings he gave up eleven runs over nine innings while striking out just six.

Meanwhile, Miley has been mostly terrible since being traded to the Orioles, but his last start against the Nats (5 IP, 1 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) was arguably his best yet. Hopefully both starters can continue their current trajectory tonight.

Thank you, Bob. It's nice to see a reference to how the O's pitching had something to do with the Nats' "cold bats". Can't the starters get a little credit for those? In these game previews, I keep seeing where the O's were lucky their bats were cold. Outside of Bridwell's grand slam on Wednesday and Ondrusek giving up 3 runs after Ubaldo's solid six innings on Thursday, the starters kept the Nats in check in that 3-1 series win. Game One, Bundy gave up 3 over six innings and Tuesday was six innings of shutout ball by Gausman.
