Since getting off to a great start in April (2.60), Smyly fell off a cliff in May (7.18) and has been very slowly crawling his way back to his usual self. He put up a 3.82 in August, but has struggled over the last three starts. His WHIP is solid, but it's the five home runs that have hurt him. Smyly has been especially prone to them this season having allowed seven in three separate months. He allowed eight runs on 10 hits, a walk and three home runs in five innings back in his June start against the Orioles. Overall though, Smyly has been dominating against the Orioles and of course was coming back from a shoulder injury this season. That start this season inflated his career numbers vs the O's dramatically and yet, they are still extremely good.

Once again, just a horrible game from the TB battery. You would think Odorizzi only knew how to throw fastballs and keep in mind here that the Orioles are a fastball hitting team that hits home runs and this is the strategy everyone decided was a good idea? Just keep throwing fastballs and hope for the best? It's really hard to believe honestly, but that's what happened and again, the Orioles blow the game wide open before the game is even halfway through. Seven straight fastballs to Machado? Nothing but fastballs to Chris Davis? It's like the Rays had no idea who the Orioles were coming into this game and changed nothing about their approach. It's truly pathetic on the part of the Rays IMO and the bullpen was no different. The Orioles will go for the sweep here, but keep in mind that this Rays team has not at all played or pitched well in this series. It is useful since the Yankees are giving Toronto a lot of trouble.

Bundy has really struggled this season against the Rays and Smyly has really struggled with the long ball this season, but has dominated the Orioles on multiple occasions in the past. Let's see what they do here.

I still don't get this narrative I keep seeing in the game previews where the O's pitchers are not getting the credit. It's always the other team is slumping or their bats went cold. This doesn't happen in a vacuum. He had four walks. Not good, but he shut them out over 5 innings, which at this stage of the season, with more arms in the bullpen to spell him if a guy's tiring, is a good thing. And it looks like a really good strategy from here on out.

Bourn is 4/9 career against Smyly. Isn't a lot, but I guess it was enough for Buck to go with him over Kim.

This does, however, give us a very stout defensive outfield today.
