</b>

Kevin Gausman is on fire lately having not allowed a run in 19 innings over three starts with 15 hits allowed and four walks. He's been a bit lucky, but 19 scoreless innings is 19 scoreless innings and he has lowered his ERA to 3.58 during the current hot streak. He faced the Yankees for two of those starts which is a team that he has dominated over his career, but he has not fared well against the Tigers. In May, he allowed four runs on 10 hits, a home run and two walks in five innings. I know it's only two ABs, but Justin Upton has gotten on base all three times against Gausman and it hitting .367 since August 20th with nine home runs and 21 RBI. He has come to life at the right time for the Tigers and has been a force in the middle of their lineup, so he could be trouble. Gausman has never pitched at Another Stadium Named After A Bank Park.

Fulmer may very well end up winning the ROY award this season and no one would question it. He has been fantastic for the Tigers this season, but he has entered his roughest stretch of the season over the last three starts. He hasn't been terrible aside from one start where he allowed six runs on 10 hits (2HR) in 5.2 innings against Boston, but allowed three in five and three in six in the other two and is 0-3 over those three with four home runs allowed. He allowed four earned in 4.1 innings on five hits and three walks back in May. That was the last start of his struggles this season and he allowed only three runs over the next eight starts totaling 51.1 innings which is astounding and lead to a 0.61 ERA in 29.2 innings for the month of June.

The orioles drop the last game in Tampa Bay as a result of a badly played and badly managed effort. Fortunately, the Tigers blew a late inning lead in their game and remain one back in the WC. Series don't get much bigger than this one, but everyone knew that already. The Tigers are currently one back of the WC.

Should be a good one, huh? The potential 2016 ROY against a guy with a 19 scoreless innings streak. Gausman has pitched poorly against the Tigers and has never pitched in their park while Fulmer does really well at home, but has struggled over the last three starts.

The Yankees are tied 3-3 with the Rays in the fourth inning of their game and Houston already lost to Cleveland earlier. Seattle plays Texas in a couple hours.

Wild Card Standings

*Toronto +1.0

*Baltimore --

Detroit -1.0

NY Yankees -2.0

Houston -2.5

KC Royals -4.0

Seattle -5.0

    • 2 hits in 29 at-bats?   I feel bad for him- what a rough start to the year.   He hit pretty well last year so I assume he'll heat up at some point but that is a slump and a half...
    • Misspelled Gary Thorne.
    • Maybe, but the other aspect I was considering is how fans travel. Baltimore won't get fans traveling from Los Angeles, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis or Oakland. But they will from the likes of Philly, New York, Boston, Toronto, etc, especially as the O's continue to win and the weather gets nicer. But if the O's can draw 25,000+ locally for an April weekend series against the A's, then I would expect some huge attendance numbers the rest of the season.
    • Give Roch a giant trophy for his "streak".  Its a lot cheaper than extending Gunnar or Adley.
    • Emotional?  I don't think Elias is the emotional type. The incentive for another team is to get a guy that can eat innings. A 100 loss team needs cheap guys that can eat innings. We've been the 100 loss team often enough to know.
    • I tend to disagree with is perspective being as relevant now. Traditionally attendance was influenced/dependent upon the opponent draw. Our fans wanting to see “the better teams” and the bigger fan bases visiting the Yard. However, I believe that times have changed. Because we have so many homegrown stars and such an excellent team, the O’s are much more of a draw themselves since the days of Cal Ripken. The Oakland series will be well attended. Early this week I purchased tix to next Sunday’s game and there were very few sections that had 4 tix available. And this is for the lowly Athletics.
    • The Orioles are the one team that has an investment in him, both monetary and emotional.   They are the one team incentivized to have him pitch in the majors this year. What ML team, rebuilding or not, wants to take a pitcher who’s given up 14 hits, including 5 home runs, in 7 AAA innings, stick him in their bullpen, so he can keep accumulating FA service time? What’s their incentive?   That he’s going to magically turn into the 2021 John Means and they can flip him at the deadline?    While it’s possible that he regains form, I don’t think there’s a ML team willing to take the lumps on a longshot.
