</b>

Jimenez has pitched better lately and though I hate to put a damper on his success, two of those starts were against offenses that got themselves out quite a bit and they happen to be the best two of the three. Jimenez has given up a home run in each of the last three starts and he doesn't have much success against the Tigers or on the road and certainly not at Another Stadium Named After A Bank Park. Almost everyone in Detroit's lineup has at least one home run against Jimenez.

Jordan Zimmermann

(9-5)

4.44 (1.30/.279)

60K / 20BB, 10HR

QS: 8

Zimmermann did pretty well for the first two months of the season, but did not do well in June at all (6.43) after which he missed all of July with a neck injury. He came back to make one start in August (a bad one) and went back on the DL with a lat injury. He will be making his return from the DL in this game after making only one start over the last nine weeks or so. Zimmermann has allowed six or more earned runs in four of his last nine starts with only one quality start over that span after starting the season with seven straight quality starts. There's no telling if he was dealing with any injuries in June, but it seems likely at least. His last rehab start was not good as he was charged with seven runs over 4.2 innings, but only two were earned.

Gausman was shaky in this game and gave up three runs in six innings while Fulmer was mostly dominating aside from the two run homer to Schoop and both were subject to the same erratic umpiring of Joe West, so let's no complain too much about how West cost Gausman the game. Fulmer had to pitch under the same circumstances and didn't get pitches all the same and still managed to outpitch Gausman. Still, he did pitch well. The professional bench-warmer Kim got the double that led to the game tying run in the eighth inning and I think it was questionable of Ausmus to remove Fulmer instead of seeing if he could get even one out in the eighth, but maybe Fulmer said he was done? Detroit's middle relief corps have been the soft underbelly of the team all season. Brach gives up the go ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth which turns out to be the game winner and that's all she wrote.

This one has the potential to go wrong on both sides. Zimmermann has made only one start in the last nine weeks or so and I think that may be the biggest factor between the two. Jimenez doesn't do well against the Tigers, so there could be a lot of runs scored here. Zimmermann is going to have to be in April form here for Detroit to have a chance.

Boston seems to be trying to run away with the division as Toronto seems to be in the midst of a collapse. The New York Yankees are now only one game out of the wild card themselves. I know there's a lot of Yankee hate around here, but Girardi is one hell of a manager to have that team where they are right now and should definitely be in the discussion for manager of the year maybe even the front runner at this point. What a job he has done in New York with that team even after trading Miller and Chapman. The wild card now has four competing teams all within one game with Houston missing a big opportunity tonight against the Cubs, but they aren't exactly easy to beat.

Wild Card Standings

*Boston +3.0

*Toronto +1.0

*Baltimore --

*Detroit --

NY Yankees -1.0

Houston -2.5

KC Royals -4.0

Seattle -4.0

... 2 of those starts were against offenses that got themselves out quite a bit ...
What does this mean?

That the hitters were up against a video game instead of an O's pitcher and moved the joy stick the wrong way.

But seriously, it's more of not giving O's pitchers their due. It's a narrative that's imprinted and he won't let go of. I'm done reading the editorializing. I'll just go with OFFNY's down on the farm thead starts and ignoring the other guy's previews. It just ruins it for me.

If you use the ignore function it will get better.

I'll set that up. Due to screen size on my iPad, I read far more these days on Tapatalk as opposed to pressing the tiny hyperlinks on the web version. But I'll go to the web version and activate that. Thanks. It'll be worth it.
