</b>

Tillman was good against the Tigers in his first start in three weeks since coming back from a shoulder injury and it actually worked out well considering the state of that team at the time and is a state they are still in as they slowly fall out of contention. What's more is that he threw 105 pitches, so it seems he is alright now for sure.

Andreise has allowed seven earned runs in two of the last three starts those two being against the Orioles and Red Sox. He pitched well against the Yankees in his last start though allowing one run on six hits in five innings. Andreise has allowed at least one home run in seven straight starts. If he can remember to mix up his pitches, he'd probably do a lot better.

Archer pitched pretty well again, but made too many poor pitches with the slider which led to home runs and hits. As Palmer words it, he sped up the Orioles bats too much with that slider which is just another way of saying he was throwing it at the wrong time. If a hitter is fouling off the fastball the opposite way due to being late with the swing or just plain missing it altogether and you throw him an off speed pitch in the strike zone, you're speeding up his bat. If he's late on the fastball, he's going to be right on an off speed pitch and so if you're going to throw a slider in that situation, it better not be a strike. Archer hung them and they got hammered and they were just horrible pitches and they got hit accordingly. I know everyone here loves Palmer, but judging by people thinking I don't know what I'm talking about when I criticize other teams for bad pitching and pitch selection, very few people here actually listen to him. I've been listening to him since I started following the Orioles like this and learned a great deal from him. I am a pitching-minded baseball guy and have been pretty much since little league. Anyway, you guys really should listen closer to Palmer and pay attention to the aspects of the game that he focuses on and you'll learn a lot as well about the art of pitching.

Anyway, Jimenez got it together after the first two innings and did well, but still four runs isn't good. For Jimenez though, it's fantastic. The Orioles come back in the eighth on Boxberger who lost his composure after the Schoop foul home run and loaded the bases without giving up a hit. The Rays nearly tie it up in the ninth, but the Orioles barely come away with the nine inning win.

Tillman over Andreise all day long. I don't think Andreise is as bad as he's been this season mostly due to bad game callers behind the plate, but when he's cruising, his stuff really isn't that bad. It's when he forgets how to use it and who he is that he gets into trouble.

There hasn't been a time since this race heated up that both wild card spots were not held by AL East teams. No other teams have been able to make a move. Detroit was briefly tied at one point, but I think they might be toast at this point. The Orioles may make the postseason by default because no other teams are even challenging them or Toronto for that matter.

Toronto wins (barring an Angels five run ninth inning), Seattle loses, NYY lose and Detroit loses. The gap is now three games. Either the Orioles or Blue Jays are really going to have to blow it at this point.

Wild Card Standings

Boston +2.0

*Baltimore --

*Toronto --

Seattle -3.0

Detroit -3.0

NY Yankees -4.0

Houston -4.0
