</b>

Gallardo has been a huge disappointment this season and has been pretty much awful all season long. He has a 7.56 ERA so far in September and has finished all but one month with an ERA above five. He finished June with a 4.41, but only made three starts in that month after missing all of May with the shoulder injury. He has issues 55 walks in 106 innings which is beyond terrible with 118 hits on top of it. He has good numbers against Arizona for his career, but who knows if that still applies to the guy he is now.

Shelby Miller

QS: 3

Miller has struggled all year long following a freak finger injury sustained when he hit it against the mound during a rather aggressive followthrough in San Diego and suffered lacerations on both knuckles of his pointer finger. He has not been himself since that happened back in April. He has allowed four runs in each of his three September starts good for a 7.36 ERA. He has allowed four or more runs in six of the last seven starts. He did not have consistent starts from June through August, but has been back in the rotation over the last four starts. He doesn't give up a whole lot of home runs, but he has allowed 26 hits in 14.2 September innings to go along with the 12 runs. Only one of those hits was a home run. Miller had three very good seasons in a row before this year. He put up a combined 8.6 WAR over those three seasons and a 3.27 (1.24/.236) over that time. He is certainly capable of much better than he has shown this season with Arizona. He has never faced the Orioles before.

Tillman couldn't be the stopper today as he couldn't get through the second inning and allowed three runs. His velocity and command were not good again and may still be hurt which is bad news, but wouldn't be all that big of a surprise either. Mancini has another big night as he's the only guy in the lineup that pitchers don't have a book on yet and he is taking full advantage of it. The three run mistake to him by Price was really his only mistake of the night. Price is very good for seven innings and the Boston bullpen closes it out. Without Mancini, the Orioles get shut out. On top of that, Donnie Hart's scoreless streak is broken on an opposite field shot by Ramirez.

So, the Orioles played the Red Sox nine times in the second half of the season and went 2-7 against them including dropping ALL SIX home games. Just embarrassing.

The D'Backs pitching has let them down big time this season so much so as to be the worst in all of baseball. Of course, the Orioles haven't been great either, but much better than Arizona. Their offense is in the top third of baseball or very close to it, so this could be a high scoring series especially in Camden Yards. Don't look past them just yet, but if there's one thing the Orioles offense does better than any other in baseball, it's punish bad pitching and the D'Backs have that in spades. Their offense should make it interesting at least.

Gallardo hasn't been good all season and neither has Miller. Miller's troubles can be traced back to his finger injury in April while Gallardo has been bad pre and post injury. Could be a lot of runs here, but Miller does have the element of surprise going for him and going by how good he was the last three years, he can snap out of this at any time.

For the first time all season long, the Orioles are not occupying a playoff spot as the Tigers take it over by a half game. Houston was shut out by the Angels, so they gain no ground and both Seattle and Toronto had off days today. The Yankees were also shut out today by the Rays.

Wild Card Standings

*Toronto +1.0

*Detroit --

Baltimore -0.5

Houston -1.5

Seattle -2.0

NY Yankees -3.0

From the penthouse to the out house. Most of the season in 1st place and for the rest of the season at least having a WC and now tonight were looking at no playoffs possibly. Now that's a collapse. Let's hope it doesn't end this way. That would be one mighty bitter pill to swallow.

It could be worse, we could be the SF Giants. They didn't even have most of the baseball world wondering why they were in first place.

It is survival time.
