Dylan Bundy

(9-6)

4.13 (1.40/.261)

99K / 41BB, 18HR

QS: 3

</b>

Bundy has allowed 18 home runs in only 104.2 IP which is pretty bad on top of everything else going on with him now. He has allowed 13 runs on 19 hits and eight walks over the last three starts totalling 14 IP with five home runs allowed. Bundy has allowed five runs in four of the last seven starts and two of the last three with 15 home runs allowed as a starter over only 13 starts which is very concerning. Bundy will face Arizona for the first time, of course. He hasn't looked good in awhile and has been pretty bad in four of the last five starts. Let's see what he does here.

Braden Shipley

(4-4)

5.49 (1.56/.300)

34K / 23BB, 12HR

QS: 4

Shipley had an impressive three start run shortly after his debut in July where he allowed only two runs in 19 innings over three starts. Outside of that, it's been mostly bad. Shipley doesn't strike out a lot of guys with only 34 strikeouts in 59 innings and he is prone to the long ball with 12 allowed in 11 starts. He allowed one in each of the last two starts and in September, he has a 7.27 ERA and has not pitched longer than four innings in three straight starts with 10 runs on 20 hits and four walks allowed in 11.2 innings.

Miley defied his scouting report in this game and the D'Backs were not prepared for him to pitch outside. AS a result, he kept them off balance all game and off the scoreboard. For Ray, he never really had good command and we see why Arizona has the worst pitching in baseball. A lot of pitches in the middle of the plate and a lot of very, very poor two strike pitches and this is exactly what the Orioles feast on. Miley is really the story of the game and the D'Backs were not prepared for it and were unable to make an adjustment to what he was doing to them. I guess Miley does know how to pitch after all.

Bundy has been awful for awhile now, but this is a favorable matchup on paper. Shipley is a rookie as well and has done worse overall, but maybe Bundy's line would look just like his if he had been starting since July as well. Toss up.

The Orioles scratch their way back up into the WC spot by a half game after the Detroit loss today as KC had a five run ninth inning to win the game. Another crushing loss for the Tigers. Seattle loses after having a chance to tie it up in the ninth and the Astros blow a late inning lead allowing nine runs to the Angels in the last two innings.

Wild Card Standings

*Toronto +1.0

*Baltimore --

Detroit -0.5

Seattle -3.0

Houston -3.5

NY Yankees -5.0

I've been out of the country for a week. I've noticed Davis has batted second on several occasions. Can someone explain the logic to me?

Because if Jones gets on base. Davis will strike out rather than hit into the DP.

I figured it had to be something like that. I'm sure they want to keep his LOB numbers below five per game and thus he can only get one now in the first inning.

    • I remember him from his time with the Braves when I was in Atlanta. This is from the 'Rick Camp Game' in 85.
    • I don’t think his lack of command in the early going is going to be fixed by changing roles.  Irvin typically has very good command.  He didn’t at the beginning of last year, but recovered it after a stint in the minors.  This year he’s having early problems again, but I think the reasons may be different.  He’s gained velocity and he’s added a new pitch that moves well but he hadn’t quite figured out how to command.  So, I don’t know if he’ll figure it out or not.  If he does, he could emerge a better pitcher than at any previous time in his career. In any event, he will get at least two more starts before Means is ready to return.   Hopefully he’ll make some progress, but he’s likely to find himself in the bullpen when Means returns regardless.
    • Irvin is probably the most frustrating pitcher on this team right now. He has good velocity and good movement, but consistently misses his targets by a foot or two. Monday night the Twins hit a number of missiles that by luck or pluck didn't fall in, but a better team would have probably put up a touchdown against him. I think Irvin would have more success out of the pen, throwing as hard as he can for 20 pitches, rather than as a starter where he has to hold back a little so as to eat innings. Of course that's not going to resolve his problems with lack of command, but at least he'd be in a position to do less damage out of the BP than by starting every fifth day.
    • As some people have noted on the Holliday thread, a quick release can help make up for less than a rocket arm and he's quick and has good hands.  Seems to work well with Gunnar too.
    • He’s been murdering a lot of balls.  99th percentile in average exit velocity, 97th in hard hit rate.  He’s been a little unlucky, with a .331 xOBA, .361 xwOBA going into last night.
    • It's only somewhat relevant to this post, but that game saving catch in Seattle, and the subsequent game winning home run is quite possibly the most impressive thing I ever saw within one inning of  each other.Cedric Mullins did that. I watched Willie Mays for most of my life...I simply dont think he ever did that...certainly not in extra innings and so close those moments were together.
