Can I ask what is the purpose of rep points?
-
02-24-2006 12:08 AM #154I think it's an indication of how well the poster has posted in the past. If someone has made good points and gotten approval over a period of time, you'll see a green bar or several green bars. If someone has made lousy points or bad posts, you'll see a red bar.

For instance, I have over 800 posts and only one green square. I guess that means that my posts haven't been extraordinarily poignant over the past few years.
Seriously, though, it's just another way to identify and place a value on the information of a certain poster.
Edit: It looks like I have two bars, now. Moving up in the world!Last edited by orangedive; 02-24-2006 at 01:08 AM.

Along with orangedive's explanation, I think it gives Tony and the rest of the staff an idea of who to keep an eye on. They know that users with good rep (regardless of the number of "pips") will typically not stir the pot. Users with red pips get closer scrutiny by the mods (I think).
Oh, and just so you know and have fair warning -- red pip folks who continue to "stir the pot" often get released/banned.

So does that mean I need to agree with everyone and try to be their friend, so that I can get good rep points?

For the answer to that, I'd say look at Sports Guy. He's a disagreeable kinda guy, in the sense that he disagrees with alot of stuff. He's got good rep.
Naw, what you need to do, at least to start, is to lay off the inside sources. People here are protective of our "big three" the ones that we know are legit. You've been busting their balls, and that's never gonna fly.

02-24-2006 11:09 AM #158As Wedge mentioned, don't call out the insiders. They are insiders for a reason -- they have proved their worth, long before you joined the Hangout. I suggest you lay low for a while and read some of the Classic Threads to see why the insiders have the respect that they have. You might also want to read Board Policies and Rules and the FAQ.

Unless of course you're me, and you don't go toe to toe with the stats guys and go with a more loosey goosey debating style.

Well, you must've really annoyed some people because evn with me giving you good rep points for trying to figure this stuff out, you are still "a little shady".
That's alright though. Make a few good comments and you can work your way up. Hell, I think I took about 30 rep points from Wedge one time and look at Mr. bright green pip now.

You have to be a Plus member to see who the points are from.
