AC/DC radio on XM. Yeah, they're probably gonna be bad on the new tour. And I doubt the record will even be The Razor's Edge, let alone Back in Black. But I love em more every year.
From this day forward, I answer only to the name 'Buttercup.'

Famous Last Words? At first I dismissed it solely because it was MCR. Then I thought "Okay, I sorta liked I'm Not Okay when it first came out (when I was like 13), and I tolerated Helena for about a week. I'm bored, so I'll give it a try." Watched the video and... it was horrible. Just seemed ridiculously over-the-top and fake. I can't fathom why such talented musicians would let themselves play in a band with such an obnoxious and untalented lead singer and with such a stupid gimmicky act.

If Coheed and Cambria ditched the singer, I could like them. The beginning of Welcome Home is very good, until the strings come in and then the singer starts to sing. That pretty much ruined the song.

The Man Who Sold the World is amazing. I love it, as should be evident by my avatar. But what's even more amazing is that it is only my eighth-favorite song on the album.

I just found out that a friend of mine is a huge Neutral Milk Hotel fan. Myself, I don't not like them. I don't love them to the point where I need to listen to them constantly, but it's not bad at all. Jeff Mangum's voice can be a little irritating at times, but they have a horn section (or at least a guy playing horns), which makes up for it.
I would prefer you throw Stadium Arcadium in the trash and pick up a copy of Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik... or at the very least, Californication. The latter of those two was really the last CD that the Chili Peppers put out that I can even listen to at this point.

The whole MCR gimmick is really bad. The lead singer isn't half as talented as he thinks that he is. They're completely riding the wave of the... whatever the hell you want to call that genre of music (which has some good bands and mostly throw-away ones in it). That doesn't mean that they're necessarily a bad band. As you said, most of the musicians in the band are talented. And me, I put absolutely zero stock into any media image or music video. I care if the music is appealing to me and, at the very least, makes me feel something or allowes me to connect to it on an emotional level. Famous Last Words covers the "appealing to me" quotient. If I started tossing out bands based on music videos or images, I don't think I'd have anyone left after about 1995 or so.

Coheed and Cambria's lead singer isn't for everyone. Absolutely. His voice is jarring. I dunno if you've ever seen what he looks like... but that voice should not come out of him. Anyhow, I don't care for his voice all that much. But the music backing it I absolutely adore. I'm a sucker for stringed instruments other than guitars finding their way into rock pieces, so if that's what killed them for you on Welcome Home then... well, I'm biased to disagree with you right there. FWIW, I like the ending of the song more than the beginning. And Crossing the Frame is quickly trying to move up as my favorite song on the CD.

Jeff Mangum's voice is also a little jarring, but in a different way. His voice fits most of the songs to me, although there's some sections where I wish he'd stop singing and just play for a bit. Overall though, I just find the CD haunting. And I'm not generally someone who really likes a horn section in my music... but it's pulled off really, really well in that album. For me though, the entire experienced is made by the images that Mangum paints with his lyrics.

90's. But you're right, the video is very ambiguously era'd. And that's part of what makes it great.

I don't actually own the songs. It's a YouTube playlist, that I made more for the interesting-ness of seeing how they evolved over time than for the actual music. I often stop after Suck My Kiss, then start over. I can tolerate the two songs I have off of Californication and By the Way (Scar Tissue and Can't Stop), but I'm not a huge fan of either, like I am of Fight Like A Brave, Higher Ground, and Suck My Kiss.

I can't get past how gimmicky MCR is, or how good the singer thinks he is when he's actually so terrible. He literally makes me want to scoop my brain out with a melon baller. I can tolerate their earlier stuff (I'm Not Okay, et al.), because they made it before they got successful and he started thinking he was the greatest thing to happen to music since Mozart, and that's evident in the music, in that it's far more guitar/drum-oriented, as opposed to Famous Last Words, in which he doesn't shut up the entire song.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree regarding Coheed and Cambria. I don't like strings (other than guitars) in my music (I much prefer horns), whereas you do. For further illustration of this point, my favorite Coldplay song is Don't Panic, followed by Yellow. And my least favorite is Viva La Vida. I could be wrong, but I don't believe I heard the sound of a single guitar throughout the entire duration of Viva La Vida.

I do love the openings of Welcome Home and A Favor House Atlantic. Him opening his mouth detracts from the substantial awesomeness created by the musicianship in these songs, but they're by no means on the level of MCR, Fall Out Boy, etc. And I agree, human beings that look like that are not supposed to make that sound.

Haunting is indeed the best word to describe that album. King of Carrot Flowers in particular is really upbeat and happy, but its subject matter is so sad, even depressing, that it's almost scary. But I love it. The title track sort of irritates me, though.

As for what I'm listening to.....

I saw MCR in concert with a girl I was dating. She loved it. I thought they were garbage. The lineup was Reggie and the Full Effect, Alkaline Trio, and MCR. Reggie et al. was great. Their cover of Slayer's Angel of Death was the highlight of the concert for me. Alkaline Trio was pretty decent, but nothing to write home about. The most notable part of MCR's set was seeing some girl stick another girl in the face.

I don't know... Maybe I've reached my musical saturation point. I just don't dig most current music, at least not the stuff on the radio. I used to listen to the radio, and liked most of what I heard.

Well alright then. That's fair enough. It's just that I was so grossly disappointed in Stadium Arcadium (which shouldn't have surprised me since I hated By The Way) that I think I'm about done with RHCP. I liked bits and pieces of Californication. Things before that were fine. Things after that are throw-away.

I guess. I mean, to me if I'm judging a band's musical qualities (not that MCR is anywhere near the top shelf, or even the middle shelves), their gimmick or public perception isn't entering into the equation. Yeah, they're annoying. Yeah, the lead singer thinks that he may in fact be the greatest thing to happen to music. None of that really matters to me because, well, I listen to the albums and avoid anything else when it comes to music. It helps me to not have to hate someone because of what they try to push themselves as and focus on their music instead. If you can't get past that, I completely understand. I'm just suggesting that maybe take that out of the equation now and then. FWIW, as a whole, I like The Black Parade better than Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, but my favorite individual songs are from the latter. I know. I'm strange.

Considering that I think that Coldplay is just awful, I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree.

Accepting that he just has a funky voice makes them much better. But yeah, they're one of the few bands I can think of that I would run out and buy an album if they did it entirely as an instrumental album.

If you want to talk about gimmicks, I think Coheed might have one of the worst ones around, but that's just me. It doesn't take away from how much I enjoy the sounds of what they put out.

See, the title track is probably my favorite on the album. King of Carrot Flowers Pts 2 & 3 is probably my least favorite. There are a lot of songs on there that sound rather upbeat, but are really tragic when you listen to the lyrics. I love that album. Every second of it.

I personally love The Uplift Mofo Party Plan more than is probably healthy. Mother's Milk and Blood Sugar Sex Magik come close, but can't match it. I've decided that I like Hillel Slovak more than John Frusciante as a guitarist.

As far as MCR goes, I find it impossible to live in a vacuum.

    And this song -

    "On And On And On"

I was at a party and this fella said to me
"Something bad is happening, I'm sure you do agree
People care for nothing, no respect for human rights
Evil times are coming, we are in for darker nights"
I said, "Who are you to talk about impending doom?"
He got kinda wary as he looked around the room
He said, "I'm a minister, a big shot in the state"
    I said, "I just can't believe it, boy I think it's great
Brother can you tell me what is right and what is wrong?"
He said, "Keep on rocking baby, 'til the night is gone"

    On and on and on
    Keep on rocking baby
    'Til the night is gone
    On and on and on
    'Til the night is gone
    On and on and on
    Keep on rocking baby
    'Til the night is gone
    On and on and on
    'Til the night is gone

Over in the corner I could see this other guy
He was kinda flirty, he was giving me the eye
So I took advantage of the fact that I'm a star
Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar
And as sure as hell this guy was coming up to me
He said, "Who am I and who are you and who are we?
What's our situation, do we have some time for us?"
I said I was not exactly waiting for the bus
He said, "If you're going somewhere can I come along?"
I said, "Keep on rocking baby, 'til the night is gone"

    On and on and on
    Keep on rocking baby
    'Til the night is gone
    On and on and on
    'Til the night is gone
    On and on and on
    Keep on rocking baby
    'Til the night is gone
    On and on and on
    'Til the night is gone

    [Extra Video Verse]
Standing up is scary if you think you're gonna fall
Like a Humpty Dumpty, 'fraid of falling off the wall
I say if you ever want to know what's going on
Gotta keep on rockin baby till the night is gone
The wonder and glory of ABBA.

I've listened to Parachutes. I've listened to most of their stuff. Still can't stand them. Don't know what it is about them, but I find them particularly awful in general. And I like strings, so Viva La Vida is fine as their stuff goes.

Their band exists to give musical accompaniment to a series of graphic novels that Claudio Sanchez writes. Basically, their CDs can be thrown together as one big concept album. They're right up there, gimmick wise, with MCR.

Yeah, it's amazing what guitars and not whining can do to your tolerability. Consequently, I actually enjoy really, really early Dashboard. Back when it was just Chris Carrabba and not "Chris Carrabba's traveling minstrels." Dashboard sounds fine acoustically. Adding in the electric guitars and drums kills their entire appeal to me.

In Utero is an entirely underrated Nirvana album. As a whole, I like it much better than Nevermind.

Who was it who also thought Parachutes was pretty good? Was it Drek? I can't remember. All I know is that Don't Panic, Spies, and Yellow are very good songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZtkv-GIElA is probably my favorite Coldplay thing. Please listen to it. I can understand hating Clocks, Speed of Sound, Fix You, etc., but this is a great song.

OK, I didn't know that. I thought they were just really weird. But now I see that there's a legitimate (okay, that's a stretch) reason for all the lyrical confusion, long-winded album names, etc. That is really weird, though. And Claudio Sanchez moves further up the list of "least favorite musicians".

I swore never to willingly listen to Dashboard Confessional ever again after I heard Don't Wait for the fourth or so time. Otherwise, I'd try and see if I could find some redeeming qualities in their early stuff.

Of everybody I know who considers themself a Nirvana fan, I only know two people who like Nevermind more than In Utero. As evidenced by my avatar, I am not one of those two people.

I can understand hating Clocks, Speed of Sound, Fix You, etc., but this is a great song.
Drek liked it? Must be awful. Seriously, Yellow makes my skin crawl. Can't stand the song. I can't even really explain why.

Well, even with the CDs telling the story that he's writing in his comics... it still doesn't explain the lyrical confusion. Or why the songs on the CD are out of order chronologically. And the graphic novel is awful. But hey, they're committed.

Like I said, I don't like them because of their lyrics (although I do enjoy some of them) or his voice. I like them because of the instrumentation.

I don't think they'd be up your alley. Acousticy, angsty, whiny... I really only listen to him when something awful's happened to me. When someone thought of using the term "emo" again in music, they probably had just finished listening to The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most.
