In other news, economics may be incredibly easy, but who the heck came up with the demand and supply curves? If changes in prices affect quantity supplied and demanded, then PRICE SHOULD BE THE HORIZONTAL AXIS!! So thank you Mr. Supply and Demand Curve Maker, by being dyslexic, you make an incredibly easy concept four times as confusing in practice as it would otherwise be.

I agree. I used to like her, wouldn't say I was a fan but I would laugh at her stuff. Now she is completely unfunny. I think her humor depended on it being shocking and different and now that it isn't anymore, it's not funny.

So why is it switched? Here is a guess. The early economists may have been imagining that, in the very short run, a given quantity of goods was supplied to the market (an agricultural harvest, for example). The supply curve is then vertical, and the price adjusts to ensure that quantity demanded equals this exogenous quantity supplied. So, in this very short run, the price seems more like the dependent variable. Now, however, the choice of axes is based more on historical convention than logic.

As I recall, Hicks in Value and Capital thought in terms of demand price and supply price. The demand price is how much a person was willing to pay for an additional unit of goods (starting from some initial quantity, Q). The supply price is how much a producer would have to be paid to provide an additional unit of goods. This construction--which I think comes from Marshall--makes it natural to have P on the vertical axis and Q on the horizontal.

It's worth checking out. It was touching to watch two or three of the kids fight through homesickness and the way the other kids, perfect strangers, counseled them about it.

There's also the "town council". The producers hand-picked four kids to be leaders, and every week they're tasked with awarding a "gold star" to the kid they feel has been the most outstanding citizen. It comes along with $20,000. The kid who won it last week was asked what he was going to do with it. He didn't hesitate, "Oh, my parents totally deserve all of it."

I don't know how much adult influence is there, but if it's half as genuine as it seems, then it's awesome to see just how much kids can be capable of.

Yeah so far watching this, it just reeks of adult intervention: the way things are set up with the colors and defined societal roles, the filmed asides, and the "pioneer book."

I have watched every minute of baseball today and I've seen those commercials probably (no exaggeration here at all) about 75 times. He does a great Bush but everything else is pretty bad, all though I guess it is impressive that he can do so many impressions even halfway decent.

Yeah, the Bush voice was really good, Madden was decent, and the other one I heard I had no idea what it was supposed to be.
