    The Dodgers and Bedard--part 100

Wolf is now on the DL,Schmidt has been out and Kuo demoted. Who can now say they don't need pitching?

    They do need pitchers, yes.
But, honestly, we can see them making the playoffs with staying where they are at, maybe going on a couple of 6 game hot streaks.

We wouldn't get Looney back, and I don't know what else we would take, they have prospects yes, but its not the best destination for Bedard. They can't move Nomar or Kent as they need what little offensive power they have left, and we have no use for them anyway.

Give them Cabrera for Loney, but that won't work at all.
I don't see anything happening with LA.

This guys has been one of the lone bright spots the last few years and some of you clowns wanna trade him.

I'll be laughing my head off when Bedard bolts for greener pastures as a free-agent. The O's will low-ball him and he'll take the same route as Mussina and Ryan.

If the Dodgers throw in Loney, Elbert, and Pedro Baez, I make the deal and don't look back.

Amen!!!! I completly 100% agree with you. Trading Bedard would just open up an even bigger whole of a #1 starter. Everyone says you start with starting pitching, and it seems like most on here want to trade our BEST pitcher. There is no guarentee that Loewen, Cabrera, Guthrie, Penn, Olsen, or any other prospect will pan out to be half as good as Bedard. You keep him until he flat out refuses to sign an extension and then you trade him the deadline before he hits free agency.

If you traded him now you'd get a lot more for him than if you traded him in his walk year.

He's not leaving this year. He's not leaving next year. So why not keep him until the trade deadline before he can leave instead of just opening up another hole in this team.

Because you won't get squat back for him if it's just a half year rental and then we'll have still have that gaping hole with nothing to show for it.

If you really think we can build around him to make a pennant run next year or in 2009, then okay. But if not, then that's a wasted opportunity to get ML ready prospects who could help us long term.

We're never going to be able to compete with the Big Boys (e.g., Yanks and Sox), if we can't keep our best players, especially pitchers. Now I know the Birds don't have the best track record on this, but we have to hope that there are "winds of change" in the organization. Otherwise, we might as well admit that we are nothing more then the Pirates and Royals, that is a minor league system for the elite teams.

Drink more kool ade if you think we win in the next few years without doing something RADICAL.
And, PLEASE----I'm not a clown--I would love to keep Bedard----BUT---there are all kinds of rumblings that he will bolt as soon as he can.
We can possibly fill multiple holes by trading him.

I have to agree. I like Bedard as much as the next guy, but we'd be crazy not to listen to offers for him.

What do you mean by "winds of change?" If you mean somehow convincing Bedard to sign a reasonable extension...then I'm all for it. But it seems that's very unlikely to happen and the FO should assess that right now so they can pull the trigger to improve the team before we miss the chance. Bedard could still have good value at next year's deadline, so that's not out of the question. But waiting until the last minute for a miracle extension is going to be disasterous.

Drafting Weiters (Boras' client), PA purportedly turning over club control to McPhail, and spending $43 million on our bullpen last year are all "winds of change" in my opinion. We have plenty of time to evaluate Bedard's situation. Think about how long we have searched for a true number 1 since we lost Mussina. Those type of pitchers are not easy to come by.

But they're easy to lose. And if we lose him in 2009 because we waited it out, what good would it have done us? I'm not saying not to try to resign him, I love Bedard. I really, really do. But we need to figure out an extension by next season or trade him to plug our other holes with a top prospect or two.

I agree with the bolded language above. I would hope that McPhail, etc. focus on locking Bedard up this off season or next year. If they sense they can't sign him by next year, then I completely agree to get what we can for him.
