23 days until the trade deadline
Who can help the O's make the playoffs in 2008? That should be the focus of this team.
The O's need upgrades at 1B, LF, CF and maybe DH. If they can find any of those answers with a deadline move, they should make it.
I would like to see the following things happen in the next three weeks.
1) Find the answer to - Will Teixeira sign an extension if traded to the O's? This means opening discussions with Texas and Boras.
2) Trade Payton to the Cubs for Matt Murton. The Cubs need a righthanded hitting outfielder. They are 4 games out in the wildcard. Pinielli has them in the pennant race. Neither Pagan nor Floyd hits lefties. Payton fits. Murton is a leftfielder who has been send to AAA. The Cubs need a veteran not a unproven 25 year old for the race. The O's need to get a young righthanded hitting outfielder. Make this deal happen.
3) Millar - Trade him if he brings back a piece of the puzzle. A young CF or 1B. Otherwise he stays. The O's should not give him away. His salary is low and he is producing.
4) Patterson - A FA who probably is not coming back. The O's need an upgrade in center. Someone with consistent offense. Again, only trade him if they can get something of value in return. No sense in giving away his defense.
5)Huff - if he starts to hit and someone wants him - trade him. This team can not withstand no offense from a middle of the order player for the first two months of the year. That is his history. That is probably his next two year future. Unless he goes on a tear, noone will want him.
5) Promote Hoey and Doyne. The O's need to know what these guys can do. Shuey, Parrish, Birkins are not big pieces for the 2008 team as it looks right now. Make some moves in the pen and see what the team has already.
6) Stick with Olson as long as he can hold his own. He could be part of the 2008 puzzle. Trachsel is not.Last edited by wildcard; 07-09-2007 at 08:11 AM.

The Mets are looking at relievers according to Gammons and the price they might be willing to pay is Lastings Milledge. If we could get Milledge for Ray or Bradford, we should pull the trigger...

I agree 100%. If Tex is our future at first base, you need to open negotiations NOW and see if we can't get Tex AND Weiters signed to long term deals by the end of August. I know there are the "wait til he's a free agent people" out there, but I agree that we need to get this guy in here now and let PA make him the face of the team for the next 10 years!
If we get Tex and can trade Millar for a solid piece, then do it. If we get Tex and no solid piece, Millar stays as the full time DH. If we don't get Tex, you keep Millar because I have ZERO confidence in anyone else on this team playing first base!
Huff is killing us right now. I try to trade him for anything we can get. Anything! Otherwise, if we do get Tex and make some other improvements in the offseason, Huff HAS to become a bench guy. He is no longer a solid starter in this league.
I agree you shed the excess weight who is not part of the future. Bring up young guys for the pen and see what they've got. Let Olson take his lumps like Loewen did last year, and hopefully Olson can compete for a rotation spot next year. Bring up Penn as soon as he is healthy! The entire rest of 2007 needs to be an evaluation period for 2008. Trying to actually win game is secondary at this point. Build for 2008, and if we can somehow take 2nd place in the East this year, then that's just icing on the cake!

Payton for Murton makes no sense for the Cubs. Murton for BULLPEN HELP would, though.

He's been injured for much of the year, but I think he eaither just came back or is coming back soon. He's on my Fantasy Team as a minor league reserve guy, but he hasn't played much at all this year.

This happens every year, doesn't it? We get all worked up, have all these threads about moves, and the FO does nothing. I don't expect anything significant to happen. With the players we have (and the contracts they are under), I'd expect a very similar team to be on the field come 8/1 (and also come 4/1/08). There might be some minor additions, but I highly doubt there is any form of overhaul.
As for the Milledge deal being discussed...I'd gladly deal any RP we have for him. He might not be having the best season, but he's only 22 and still a very solid prospect. If his price tag is dropping that much, I'd definitely try to get him.

No chance the Cubs deal Murton for Payton, just not happening.
I'd like to keep Millar, mainly because he's one of two guys on the roster (Roberts being the other) that puts in a good at-bat every single time. He has that commodity we are hugely lacking in, patience. I think we would really miss him.
Totally agree with points 5 and 6. Olson is the future and should be here to learn from Mazzone for the rest of the year. There is no way on this earth that Trembley or anyone else can convince me Hoey and Doyne would put up worse numbers than Baez and Parrish. They have to be up here, it makes no sense that they aren't already here, especially with Hernandez and Birkins on the roster.....
I think the best move we can realistically hope for before the deadline is for someone to offer a top 5 prospect for Walker or Bradford. These guys could genuinely help a contender and we might get lucky with a return here.

Why? I'd like to hear why you think that is true.
That is exactly why someone may trade something good for him. Someone in a pennant race. At 35, he is not the O's future first basemen. Probably should not be the O's 2008 first baseman.I'd like to keep Millar, mainly because he's one of two guys on the roster (Roberts being the other) that puts in a good at-bat every single time. He has that commodity we are hugely lacking in, patience. I think we would really miss him.
Baez will be back and noone is going to trade for him. Hoey and Doyne for Parrish and Birkins would be a nice move.Totally agree with points 5 and 6. I would hate to see Walker go. I think he could be a really good part of the 2008 team. However he is far from untouchable for the right player. Trading Bradford is alright by me. His problems against left handed batter is concerning and being a less then one inning pitcher for a righthander is very limiting.I think the best move we can realistically hope for before the deadline is for someone to offer a top 5 prospect for Walker or Bradford. These guys could genuinely help a contender and we might get lucky with a return here.

Milledge, eh, whatever.
I know better then to get my hopes up for us making any significant moves at the deadline.
