snakes can be very scary...however, snakes are one of the most beneficial animals one can have in their lawn.

They kill all rodents and you won't find herds of groundhogs, rats or any other lawn killing animals anywhere. If you can stay away from them, let them do their thing, you'll be thankful

I have read that one way to get rid of the snake is to put down lime. I don't know ifr that works, it was just what I read. They also sell snake repellant at hardware stores and co-ops. I also read that they don't always work as advertised. Check out this site:

Funny stuff. I was helping a friend get rid of some junk in his backyard a few weeks ago and after lifting up a few bricks we had a young copperhead jump at us. My friend, who as it turns out is deathly afraid of snakes, pulled a Forrest Gump and ran to the next state. It was only about 18 inches at most. My friend lives next to the perfect snake habitat so he better get used to seeing them. I flicked the poor lil frightened snake over the fence into the woods with a stick. He also had a black widow in his back yard. I love spiders but sadly he made me kill it or he wouldn't get back to work.

This thread has absolutely cracked me up, but when I read this line, I nearly sprayed my soda across the computer monitor! Your friend and I would get along well. I'm sure my neighbor across the street wonders why at the end of me cutting my lawn each week, I go running across my driveway, still pushing a running lawnmower, while screaming like a 10 year old schoolgirl!

I bought Snake Away for my other house I dont how well it worked.I was too terrified to go outside much to find out!

I don't care for snakes, and was horrified the first time I saw the big brown snake sunbathing on my driveway AND JUST ABOUT REACHING FROM ONE SIDE OF THE DRIVE TO THE OTHER. But suddenly the moles and voles who were destroying my lawn disappeared. And since I have tried to be more patient with our snake friends.

The exception is copperheads. We live on about an acre of woods with a stream down a hill. The copperheads for the most part stay by the stream, well far from us. But after Ivan came through a few years ago and a few other times when the stream flooded we have seen them up here. As long as they stay down below, I will let the rest of the snakes live in peace in my yard.

For as long as I can remember, my family home has periodically had the snake drama in the basement. Not sure how the heck they get in, through the crawlspace, through the drainage pipes, crack in foundation somwhere but they get in. Every 2 or 3 years we see them. I am sure they are there more often but I dont look for them. They usually hang in the plumbing pipes overhead in the basement that connects to the crawlspace over the rest of the house.

My Mother is deathly afraid of them. My Father befriends them as God's creatures. Mom wants them dead. Dad wants them alive. We catch and release. Yes, I dont know how many GD snakes I have captured over the years. I am no Croc Hunter either, I dont prefer snakes at all, but I dont really want to kill them either. So, how do you catch a snake you might ask...

It aint easy if you have a bit of an aversion to them as I do. And it gets exciting when they are on the move on the floor of a relatively small basement. But these are black snakes and I know they cant really hurt me.

We sorta corner them til they curl up in their defensive posture and then we scrape them, hurl them, whatever into a box or trunk and throw something on top asap. Gets the blood pumping it does.

Dad makes us take them about 10 miles down the road so he can tell Mom they wont be back. Releasing is alot easier.

Anyway, we had one in the basement last week. Dad called me to come home to help him get it. He said dont tell Mom. We went and looked at it in a most inconventient place. Iit was surrounded by pipes and curled cozily around some plumbing. He looked to be a small one, maybe 3 1/2 feet long. (we've caught much bigger ones yet never ever spotted the granddaddy who left the 7 foot skin).

Anyway, Dad thought about how to get him. He went upstairs and got a rake. I'm like, rake? No way you can even get close to pulling him. I went upstairs to get a metal clothes hanger and molded it to snake catching perfection. By the time I got downstairs with Dad, lil ole snakey took off. This one we didnt catch. Although I have been watching more Discovery channel and toyed with the idea of just grabbing it, I didnt and blew my chance. I did get within a few inches of his head and talked to him a bit, and he didnt act aggressive to me at all. Oh well, I am sure he is still there. We will get to see him again soon. Maybe he will be bigger next time.

Anyway, a black snake will not hurt you at all. They just want to be left alone and I am sure they view you with as much distaste as you view them. But you are in their home and you wont leave either.

It may be illegal to own a mongoose in the US, but I'll bet you can buy some bottles of mongoose whizz on line, and that'd be just as effective. Snakes smell that whizz, they'll figure there's a mongoose around and take off for other parts. Snakes are stupid, they don't know what country they're in or what the mongoose laws are.
