    Minor League Summaries, 7/11

While Norfolk, Bowie, and the GCL O's enjoyed the All-Star Break, Lynchburg lambasted Frederick, Delmarva dropped Hagerstown, Aberdeen outslugged Williamsport, and Bluefield slammed Greenville.

Delmarva's Brandon Tripp went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI. He's tonight's Orioles Hangout Player of the Night.

I actually wrote that. Here's the whole text...

The Aberdeen Ironbirds won a ridiculous slugfest Wednesday night, beating the Williamsport Crosscutters 15-10. This was a game in which the winning pitcher gave up two runs and allowed seven base-runners in 3.2 innings. Frankly, that about sums it up, but I’ll continue describing it anyway. Extensively.

The Aberdeen offense was impressively well-balanced; six different players scored at least two runs. However, left-fielder Joseph Nowicki was the clear star of the game for the IronBirds. He had three hits – two of them doubles – and five RBI. Designated Hitter Wally Crancer and right-fielder Robbie Widlansky each homered for the Good Guys. (Sorry.)

Williamsport starter Drew Naylor had an odd game. He allowed five runs in the first two innings on three walks, four hits and two errors. Perhaps because of the errors, Naylor was kept in the game, and he proceeded to justify his manager’s faith in him by recording the next 11 outs while only facing 11 hitters. (Center-fielder Matthew Angle singled with one out in the fourth, but was caught stealing to end the inning.)

But with two outs in the sixth, Naylor completely collapsed. Two singles, a wild pitch and two walks scored one run; Naylor’s night was finished, and Christopher Rhoads replaced him. That’s when things got really interesting. Double for Joseph Nowicki. Single for Anthony Martinez. Home run for Wally Crancer. (By the way, I originally typed Wally’s last name as “Cancer”. Sorry, Wally – I’m sure nobody in your fifth-grade class called you that, ever.) In all, seven runs scored in the inning, and Aberdeen had their 12th run and their eventual margin of victory

Aberdeen’s pitchers were not much better than Williamsport’s. But IronBird Kyle Touchatt pitched two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run. Why is that significant? Because he was literally the only pitcher – of eight on both teams – to accomplish that feat! So, he and Nowicki will share Player-of-the-Game honors; Nowicki for actually being good, and Touchatt for being merely less bad.
