07-28-2007 12:31 AM #121Well, his command isn't bad but it is certainly getting worse...The stats i showed obviously back that up.I also don't see any issues with command.
Yea i agree they didn't hit him hard tonight. But he was allowing the baserunners early and then he was able to get the double play in his last inning. Could have been worse but he did a good job of getting out of trouble.I actually thought Jeremy got pretty unlucky tonight. Several of the hits were softly hit but well placed including the grounder to right by Cano that drove in the second run. I didn't see any really hard hit balls that were caught although there was one long fly ball to center early in the game. He abused Posada and Jeter tonight.
Well, that would be why they are balls.I also think his walk rate will be fine. He was just missing with a lot of pitches tonight. The Yankees take a lot of borderline pitches and expect to get the call and they do most of the time.

Let me go back... what I meant was is it possible he has been throwing more two seamers than he had been throwing. Is it also possible that he is just dialing back his fastballs? an 88 mph fastball looks the same as a 91 mph fastball when the other fastball he throws has the same 3 mph drop.

I just want to be really careful with the wording here. I don't want anyone to quantify us picking him up as completely flukey or lucky. The FO/scouts did an amazing job finding this guy and they deserve a lot of credit for it. Now, I'm sure he has given them more than they could have ever imagined, but this was an outstanding move by our much maligned FO/scouting department.
So was Burres.

Isnt Trembley most responsible for picking up Guthrie? Someone tell me if I am wrong about this.

I meant by his style of pitching and his demeanor on the mound. At this stage of his career he reminds me of him, and I could see the guy becoming really good because of his ability to throw the changeup. All he needs is more control, which should come in time.
When Moyer was younger, he threw harder, and was a wee bit wilder than he is now....kinda like our guy Burres.

What the heck were they thinking? Its not like they couldn't have released someone from their 40 man rosters for Guthrie. If Trembley recommended to the FO to pick him up, you'd figure that the D-Rays AAA manager would've seen him as well and could've given him a "thumbs up".
Oh well...I guess we'll have to live with that decision from those two teams!

I wanna thank BG and give him rep pts for starting a Frobbyesk (is that a word) jinx on Mr Guthrie and straightening him out. Thank you!

I think Guthrie's gonna do all right, he's still adjusting to the Major League level. Mazzone's there to back him up when he's having a hard time and he just pitched a 1 ER game against the Yankees yesterday.
