    Draft Watch

Not really intending this to be negative, but moving up in the draft is about the only good thing about an extended losing streak.

But as of the morning of September 7th, we're only 2.5 games back of the
    1st position in the draft...

    Team W L PCT GB
    1 Devil Rays 58 82 414 ---
    2 Whitesox 59 81 421 1
    3 Marlins 60 80 428 2
    4 Orioles 60 79 431 2.5
    5 Pirates 61 79 435 3
    6 Astros 62 78 442 4
    7 Royals 62 77 446 4.5
    8 Reds 63 77 450 5
    8 Giants 63 77 450 5

I think the "first place" team is supposed to be the Devil Rays, not the Blue Jays.

I'm certainly not cheering for the O's to tank games or lose or whatever the case may be. I have to admit though, if we got into the top 2 because of this losing streak it would be easier to tolerate IMO. What would really stink though is if we continue to lose games but the teams below us lose them more often than we do.

There are, as usual, many fine players that will be available in next year's draft. It's too early to know where we'll be picking or whom we'll be getting, but it's never too soon to imagine...

Third baseman Pedro Alvarez appears to be a "can't miss" superstar, and will likely be the first selection. I must say that if we were ever in a position to draft him, I'd be even more excited about that than even the Wieters pick this year. That says a lot. However, there are other players who stand, at this juncture, to be chosen in the top half of the draft and possible top ten selections as well, with my personal favorite being 1B Justin Smoak.

Regardless of who we get, I hope it is a position player.

Im not 100% sure about this, but with the whole league's alternating draft picks, if the season ended today then would we actually get the 6th pick?

    1) Marlins (b/c last year it was an AL team)
    2) Devil Rays
    3) Pirates
    4) White Sox
    5) Astros
    6) O's

Let me know if I am wrong.

A ton can happen between now and the draft. I saw an Q&A from I think it was Baseball American who talked about next year and Aaron Crow from Missouri was a name that came up as a potential #1 overall.

Yeah, it's certainly early to know anything for sure, but I imagine we'll be in a good position to get another (hopefully) piece to our future lineup. Crow had an outstanding summer and all, but wouldn't he be the perfect Raven?

They don't do it that way anymore. E.g. this year the Rays and Royals were 1-2.

Funny, I was just wondering where exactly we stand in the race for the #1 draft pick. Its sad that its necessary, but since it is, I like this thread. I hope its constantly updated throughout Sept.

    Including Magic #

Getting close enough to the end of the season that the magic # for the prize is getting more appropriate...

Team W L PCT GB Rem. Magic
    1 Devil Rays 61 86 414 --- 15 ---
    2 Whitesox 62 84 424 1.5 16 13
    3 Orioles 62 83 427 2 17 14
    4 Marlins 63 83 431 2.5 16 12
    4 Astros 63 83 431 2.5 16 12
    6 Royals 63 82 434 3 17 13

It is of course based on the "all important win column". So any combination of Orioles wins, and Devil Rays losses equaling 14 means we're out of the race for the #1 draft pick. This includes the tie-break that the Rays finished ahead of us in the draft selection last year, so they'd win the tie-break.

Still two games behind the Devil Rays as of Sept 18th. Tied with KC for the 2nd slot.

Devil Rays appear to have the tougher schedule with 2 against, LA, 3 vs Bos, NYY, and Toronto remaining. We've got 4 at TX and 1 against KC in addition to the remaining NYY and Toronto games. KC has a bunch of games against the White Sox so they appear to have the easiest schedule.
