OK, so I don't have HBO, and had never seen it, and Season 1 finally made it to the top of my torrent queue.
I've now spent the last 6 hours watching it. I'm hoping that the next episode won't have downloaded by the time I finish this one so I have an excuse to stop watching.
I can see why all of you say it's the best show ever.
Well episodes 7-13 finished overnight, so it looks like my Saturday is shot. Luckily I should be done in time to go out tonight.![]()
I was visiting my mother about 2 weeks ago. She lives in Hamilton area of Baltimore City and just so happened, the crew from the Wire was on location near Burdick Park getting ready to film... did not stick around to watch.
"Everything we have and are is ours, and still exists, by grace and courage of the soldiers. They are the men of the century, because without them we should no longer be numbering its years-- or numbering them only to curse the wretchedness of our survival in it." Eric Linklater, 1953.
Just wait until you get to Season 3.
Enjoy watching! I am one of those folks around here who considers The Wire to be the best TV show ever made.
Good news to add to the thread: seems as though season 4 DVD will be coming out late November, early December as per the HBO website:

Shut it all you elitists
Just FYI.
Steve Earle's (who also stars as Waylon on the show) brand new album Washington Square Serenade was just released today (available on iTunes if you use that). On the album contains his cover of "Way Down in the Hole" which will be used as the S5 theme.
I was just listening to it. When every season starts I tend to mourn the loss of the previous season's version of "Way Down in the Hole". But, by the end of the season I'm in love with the new version.
January can't get here quick enough, or even Dec. 4 for that matter. I hope that Simon and Co. do more commentary on the upcoming DVDs.
But anyhoo, the S4 DoJaMe version actually did grow on me by the end of the season. I'm a Steve Earle fan, but I have to say that, so far, his version is easily at the bottom of the list. I'm sure as the season goes on there is a good chance that I may change my mind.
we'll see.
BTW - I don't post much, obviously, but I really do read the board quite a bit. I remember your post a while back having to do with Baltimore and urban planning and such. You've probably seen this blog before, but if not, I find it pretty interesting: http://baltimoreinnerspace.blogspot.com/
Just finished Season 2, and I'm 3 episodes into Season 3. If I dind't have to wait for teh episodes to download, I'd be glued to my screen.
Lester,
From one Baltimore city PO-LICE to another, welcome aboard.
'The Wire' is the greatest show in the history of television.
I'm gonna have to find Steve Earle's version of "Down in the Hole." I feel the same way as you about the opening theme each year. I always like the previous year's version better, but then grow to love it by the end of the season.
My Opinion of the seasons is this
Season 4 best ever. The kids are just so compelling.
Season 3 just kick butt. The return of Avon
Season 1 getting started. finding a groove. Avon and Bell start rocking
Season 2 kind of a let down. Got tired of the Union Characters.
