Just got through season 4, and unless season 5 is significantly better than I remember (least good season imo), I am sticking with season 4 as the best.

Season four is one of the best seasons for any show ever! To me, it clearly took a great series and made it an all-time classic. It was ashamed that season five was such a let down after such a great season, but the newspaper theme was just so unremarkable. At least they gave us a great finale.

Season 4 is the best, season 2 is my favorite.

I picked up season 1 last year and am now in the middle of season 2.

I absolutely loved season 1. Season 2 is ok so far, but it hasn't been as addictive as the first season.

You really have to watch Season 2 more then once. This actually holds true for each season. I did not really like Season 2 the first time I watched it, but now feel its comperable to Seasons 1 and 3. Season 4 is far and away the best. Season 5 was a let down, but it had a good finale. What was supposed to be Season 6 would have been great too, but Simon wasn't comfortable with the direction and felt he didn't have enough inside knowledge. It was supposed to be about the illegal immigrant population in Baltimore.

I agree with this. Frank Sobotka became one of my favorite characters in the series, but I didn't appreciate him as much until the second viewing.

Like most have said, season 4 is my favorite.

First thing I noticed at the end of season three...

    Spoiler
...when Omar threw the guns used to kill Stringer into the harbor by the port, there were "Re-elect Frank Sobotka" signs pasted around there.

    I love callbacks like that.

Yep! The show does that all the time..My favorite is season 1 when little Kennard pretends he's Omar, and 4 seasons later, well...

The callbacks are great. Bubbles at some point (maybe season 1?) talked about his son Keyshawn, but we never ended up seeing him. I always fully expected him to show up. Other good stuff:

The guy with the thick Baltimore accent that is Major Colvin's #2 (Dennis Mello) is played by the real Jay Landsman.
Bob Ehrlich plays a security guard at the Statehouse.
    Cheese is Randy Wagstaff's father.
Only one police officer over the course of five seasons ever fires his weapon, and everytime he does, he makes a mistake.
The guy that plays the reverand that helps Cutty get his life get back together was actually a pretty notorious criminal that Ed Burns actually busted.
Omar never curses over the entire series.
The woman who played Snoop was convicted of second degree murder in the 90's.
Both detectives wakes that took place over the course of the show were because the actor that played the detective died in real life.

I guess Ed Norris is too obvious

I always liked the season 5 callback when they show Johnny 50 from Season 2 drinking bourbon from the bottle in the homeless camp.

More diehards know this, but "the guy who plays the reverend" is actually Melvin Williams, who Avon was based on.
