Thread: The Wire

Kind of funny- wouldn't I be an Orioles fan and wouldn't I have a special relationship to the city of Baltimore and most of all If I wouldn't be a member of this board I never would have even heard about The Wire. As much as I know this show unlike other HBO productions will not be synchronized and so will never be shown in Europe (maybe GB).
I started watching season one two years ago and loved it. Then I watched series two I loved it even more and just yesterday I finished season three and it was some of the best stuff I ever watched on tv. I aways take my time in between the different season because The Wire is so intense and I want to take my time to think about what happened before starting with the next season.
I think one of the main reason why this show isn't as popular as it should be (at least outside of B'more) is that the overall topic, drug-crime etc. really doesn't attract many people. Most of my friends, like me love to watch quality tv shows and don't mind watching them in english. When I told them that The Wire is the most fascinating show I have ever seen they got interested but when I told them what this show is about they cooled of. You have to watch the Wire to get addicted and with the quantity of shows around most people tend to watch other stuff before watching a show in which topic related they are not interested in.
Some thought on season three:
1. Someone already mentioned it in this thread. What's great about this show is that you not only get addicted by the "good" guys but also by the "bad" guys. I was really shocked to see Stringer die. I can't really decribe why but I liked him and sometimes even felt sorry for him.
2. Another thing are the subplots. I absolutely love the subplot in season three about the guy (I forgot his name) who came from prison and after trying to get back in business build his own boxing gym.
3. In most shows there are 2-3 characters you feel addicted to but in "The Wire" there are about 15 characters I feel addicted to.
Btw. is season five really the last one and how many episodes will it have? And great news about the music CD- I hope the greek song from season two is included and also hope the irish song (police funeral) from season three is included.

Great points about the show. To me Season 4 was their best yet and that was without Stringer and Avon, and on top of that McNulty's role was greatly reduced this past season. Obviously this says a ton about the writing and acting.
Skywalker, you may want to avoid these but for the rest of you who have seen S4, here are some incredibly cool, but short (20 to 30 second) promos for S5. Despite being very brief in duration, if you are the type who would prefer to avoid any inkling of S5 knowledge prior to its airing, then you might want to avoid. However, personally, I don't think there is anything here that will do anything but make you wish for January 6th all the more.
Marlo
McNulty
Omar
Carcetti
Bubbles - apparently his real name is Reginald Cousins, don't think that was ever revealed before.

Season 4 arrived in the mail yesterday. So psyched.
I encourage you all to watch the 3 "shorts" David Simon put together as a lead up to season 5. They are all found on Amazon and depict younger versions of Omar and Prop Joe. They also show the scene where McNulty and Bunk met for the first time.
Good stuff.

We are less than one month away from the return of the greatest show in television history, and it's set in our own backyard.
This thread deserves to be at the top of the page!
I'm in the middle of season 4 right now as I never did get to see the last few episdes when they were originally aired. What a season....phenomonal.
I am already upset that we only have 10 episodes left to go.

I still haven't seen The Wire yet, but Best Buy had a 60% off HBO TV Series DVD sale a couple weeks ago so I picked up seasons 1-3 for $22 a pop. Can't wait for winter break to actually get a shot to watch them.

You're in for a treat. I didn't start watching until Season 4, so going back and watching seasons 1-3 probably wasn't quite as good as watching them fresh, but every season is still awesome.
Just finished catching my roomate up on the show. We're all set for the Season 5 premiere.

HOLY CRAP!!
Here is the official Season 5 preview. Look for brief glimpses of Avon Barksdale and Nick Sobotka. I've only watched it a couple times and, honestly, I haven't been able to spot Nick yet, but I was assured by a friend that he is in there.

That trailer is awesome. Can't wait til New Years Eve!
Looks like Clark Johnson has a pretty major role this season. I really liked him on Homicide so I'm sure I will like him in the Wire. I believe he wrote a few episodes of the Wire with David Simon as well.
Damn I wish this wasn't the last season. And I wish it was longer than 10 episodes. I wonder if the last episode will be any longer?

Don't know whether this has been posted already or not, but: Felicia "Snoop" Pearson had her autobiography published in November. Haven't read it but it's getting very good reviews at Amazon.
Cannot wait for next season. Just watched the half-hour season teaser--looks great, huge focus on the Baltimore Sun this time around.

I wanted to show off that Omar's trenchcoat is currently hanging on my coat rack.
How'd I get it? Long story...

So with Monday fast approaching, here's the question:
Do you guys watch The Wire On Demand as soon as it comes out or wait to watch it when it airs?

We wait. I love On Demand and DVRs and all the new technology, but there is just something great about having this set time to look forward to. That said, are they going to do that again this season? I thought the early release on On Demand was a promotional thing to bring up the ratings.
