I watched the first season of this online (mostly on back-to-back night shifts at work, which probably made me enjoy it more). Ended up getting Showtime solely to watch the second season, can't wait for it to start. One of my coworkers downloaded a couple of the 2nd season episodes that got leaked onto the internet, said its really good.

You should check out Brotherhood which shows either before or after Dexter. Nothing groundbreaking, but a pretty solid show.

Excellent first episode. I was wondering whether the show might lose some steam with the Ice Truck Killer no longer around as a nemesis, but this episode was great. Great twist, finding the bodies from Dexter's previous killings-- I can't wait to see where this storyline goes.

I liked it. Dexter is a great show, but I think it kind of drags a little when it focuses on the secondary characters. I like his sister and girlfriend, and I feel they're necessary to the show, but I couldn't care less about any of the other characters. I really think they should cut down on Laguerta's screen time. She's the least interesting character on the show.

Well, if they had held with the source material, (SPOILER FOR THE BOOK!) LaGuerta wouldn't be around (and Brian/Rudy/ITK would still be alive). (END BOOK SPOILER) But you can't have Deb's story arc without LaGuerta or a person exactly like her (a piss poor cop but a great ass kisser), unfortunately. And you gotta have Doakes. That's gonna be a great subplot throughout this season.

Same here. Fortunately Comcast gave me an awesome package deal.

How faithful has the show been so far to the books? That certainly sounds like a big difference.

Well, let's see. I'll spoiler these for those that want to read the books, though I've only read Darkly Dreaming Dexter thus far. The one major difference is length, so many of the subplots aren't there.

LaGuerta clearly has a crush on Dexter and tries to get in his pants at one point.
There is WAY less with Rita. No ex-husband subplot. Only two or three scenes with her period. Just enough to show that Dexter is trying to "play normal."
Brian/ITK doesn't become "Rudy" and date Deb in the book.
Dexter refers to his sociopathic side as The Dark Passenger. He has to soothe The Dark Passenger around once a month in order to function properly.
Doakes doesn't have a side story, he's just a thorn in Dexter's side.
Dexter gets "creepy vibes" from Vince, and actually wonders if they aren't alike in that regard.
Angel isn't a detective, he's a medical examiner. No subplot about his family.
LaGuerta is much more of a bungler in the book. She is portrayed as having risen in ranks by ass kissing and not police work. This is there more to give Deb grief since Deb is truly Harry's daughter, and is blunt and a hard worker...but she relies on Dexter way too much to help her undermine LaGuerta.
LaGuerta is killed in the final altercation (I can't remember how exactly, Dexter may have actually killed her to protect Brian, or maybe Brian killed her...) and Dexter lets Brian escape instead of killing him.

Oh, man, when Dexter realized that Doakes finding him at the NA meeting was probably the best possible scenerio for him, and he started clapping...that was awesome.

I got a library book on CD of the third story of Dexter. If any story is perfect for listening on CD it is the Dexter books. They read simple but are easy to listen to. The beginning is just weird as it tries to explain the whole history of the dark passenger. I was laughing a little. Still it is quite good and takes my mind off of being bored as I drive. Funny now I find myself parking and not wanting to get out of the car. I sit and listen for ten minutes more.

I just finished watching the first season on DVD via Netflix and was impressed. Unfortunately campus cable doesn't have Showtime, so I have to wait for the second season DVDs to come out, which really really sucks.
