Greg, really appreciate the work you put into this draft thread. IMO, things like the draft and the minors are much more important presently than worrying about what Luis Hernandez hits this season (even though those who have argued about it all winter would disagree with me). Your info is great for us that realize this rebuilding effort is going to take more than three months. Look forward to all your posts.

    You're quite welcome.

The draft has always been a hobby'ish thing for me, but in the last few years in particular it has become so much more. We agree about the importance of Player Development/Drafting/Scouting... without a strong base to build from, we would continue to be mired in near-irrelevance.

For Wayne25. Even more info on Beckham's hitting prowess...

This from BA's recent 2008 Draft Preview...

"BEST PURE HITTER: Beckham is near the top of every category but hitting is his best tool. He has a quick bat with pop that can turn around any fastball. The catcher position has two of the top hitters in Adrian Nieto (20) and Kyle Skipworth (5). While Skipworth's lefthanded bat makes him attractive, Nieto is the better pure hitter. Harold Martinez (7), Eric Hosmer (4) and Zack Cox (21), all corner infielders, grade out with plus bats."

Lightbulb Shortstops in the 2nd round?

    Greg,

Just curious if any talented shortstops will be available in the 2nd round? Please no Blake Davis type players! Only players who can hit (with developing power) like SD's Greene and play solid SS defense in the majors.

Once again thanks for helping us average fans!

I think there's another Beckham in the college ranks, right (Gordon Beckham?).

In a selfish way, I'm hoping Beckham doesn't have a spectacular season--he may not last till 4 if he does.

Gordon is a very solid SS from the U. of Georgia. He could make his way into the first round, or supplemental with another fine season. I'd love to grab him if available in round two.

Yes, sir. That would be terrific if we end up missing Tim Beckham, but drafting Smoak or Hosmer, and then getting Gordon Beckham in the second round.

Is Gordon Beckham good with the glove, as well the bat?

Beckham is a very sound defender at short and should stay there throughout his pro career.

Well when you put it that way Now that is a rebuttal... He sounds worthy; great to have another "bat" to add to the list.

Greg, any chance Dykstra is around in the second? Are there any other 2nd baseman prospects that you like, that will be there after round 1? What do you think of the Hart kid from FSU in the cubs system? I wouldnt mind if he was a part of the Brob trade. Im pretty sure he would have to be a PTBNL. Thanks boss.

I don't see Gordon falling to the 2nd round -- maybe with a slightly down season. More likely, Flaherty out of Vandy could be there.

David Adams out of UVA and Aaron Luna of Rice should be there. You'd likely be better off targeting Reese Havens (South Carolina) or Flaherty and converting them to 2b.

Cutter I presume? Yes, very possible. I am high on Cutter and would be pleased to have him join our system. Alan Dykstra is a powerful 1B'man out of Wake Forest, who also is a good candidate for round two... no relation however.

Hart? You mean Tony Thomas? Good athletic player with a lot to prove as a pro... could develop nicely however. Thomas was a 2007 draftee, so while possible to deal for him, it's unprecedented to be a PTBNL this far off from actually being able to acquire him.

South Carolina SS and Justin Smoak teammate Reese Havens profiles better as a second baseman than short, and has scouts conflicted on his pro value. So... unless he breaks out big this season he'll likely go anywhere from rounds 2-5. There are others who may be available, but none that have me excited for round two.

Any chance that the players you guys have just mentioned project higher than our middle IF we drafted in recent drafts (Henson, Blake Davis, Adams, etc.)?
