To get back to the title of this thread (is that permitted?), I find it interesting that DT elected to start Fahey today against a lefty (I was gonna write LH, but realized that it would be wildly confusing that way).
Obviously, with Fahey starting less than a quarter of the games thus far, it would be easy for DT to restrict Fahey to starts against only righties (assuming that the current usage rate continues for a while). So why would DT choose to start Fahey against a lefty?
Wild speculation here. Has DT seen enough of LH to conclude that it's time to experiment in a more serious way with the idea of Fahey as the starting SS, with Bynum assuming the utility role upon his return? If that's his thinking, it would be pretty important to start seeing Fahey not only in more games, but also in more situations -- such as against left-handed pitching. I can't flip this statement around and claim that a single start against a lefty PROVES that DT is thinking along these lines. But it sure has me wondering. I'll be curious whether Fahey begins seeing more times as the starter over the next several games.
Fahey should be the starter(actually, with the way things are right now, they should platoon).
But i think Fahey is the better player...He seems to be smarter...He is as good defensively and is a better hitter, albeit not by much.
At this point, I agree Fahey's the better player - and don't that speak volumes.
However, take a look at look at Hernandez's numbers against lefties before you say he should be platooned with Fahey. If they're going to platoon, then that's when I agree that Cintron should be brought up as he appears to be a much better hitter from the right side.
If you look at his minor league splits Hernandez appears to have a pretty typical platoon split for a right-handed batter. Yes, I know he's supposedly a switch hitter, and yes this is a pretty tiny sample. But he's been better against lefties for the last two seasons, and in his short major league career.
